Photographing big cats can be challenging. They are wary, intelligent, and masters of camouflage. Some, like the clouded leopard, are so rare and elusive that one could spend years searching without seeing one. Others, like the Amur leopard, have been reduced to just a few individuals in the wild. For this reason, several of the big cats I photographed were captive animals. But I still had an exciting time searching for others in the wild. My favorite moments were on safari in Africa. I loved watching the cheetah brothers on pages 44–45 as they patrolled their territory. They walked together in perfect rhythm, alert to everything in their environment.
