THE AMAZING CROSS, by Herman Hoeksema. Not only for the Lenten season but also for any time of the year, these messages on the Cross of Christ will bring illumination and heart-searching. The book is divided into two sections, “Amazing Judge ment,” which considers the Passion as God’s judgment of the world, and “Amazing Obedience,” which views the Saviour’s suffering from the standpoint of His voluntary obedience as the Servant of Jehovah. Prayer fully studying thèse thirteen chapters, one cannot help but have a deepened love for the Saviour. 183 pages. Wm. B. Eerdmans Pub. Co., Grand Rapids, Mich. Cloth. Price $2. NAMES OF GOD, by Nathan J. Stone. He who has found in “the face of the Lord Jesus Christ” the revelation of the glory of God,‘ will find in these studies of the Old Testament names of God a beautiful radiance. It is signif icant that the book is written by a Hebrew Christian, professor of Hebrew at the Moody Bible Institute. There are twelve chapters, treating twelve names, beginning with the well- known “Elohim,” and including “Je- hovah-Rophe,” “Jehovah-Shalom,” “Je- hovah-Shammah,” and others, giving the derivation and pronunciation of the words, their meaning and use in Scripture. 160 pages. Moody Press, Chicago 10, 111. Cloth. Price $1. TWENTIETH CENTURY REFORMA TION, by Carl Mclntire. Written by the able and fearless pastor of the Bible Presbyterian Church of Collings- wood, New Jersey, first President of the American Council of Christian Churches, and President of the Board of Directors of Faith Theological Seminary of Wilmington, Delaware, this is a thorough and accurate work on the Fundamentalist-Modernist con troversy in the Protestant denomina tions. It deserves a careful and thoughtful reading by every Christian minister and layman in our land. 219 pages. Christian Beacon Press, Col- lingswood, New Jersey. Cloth. Price $1.50. MORE POWER IN PRAYER, by David M. Dawson. How to pray effectively is suggested here in twenty chapters including: “Who May Pray?” “Why Don’t We Pray More?” “The Cross in Prayer,” “Prayer and Revival,” “How to Commit,” and “The Ministry of the Storm.” It is not merely “another book on prayer” ; it is, rather, a heart warming series of meditations, inter spersed with poems, written humbly by a man who prays and who exalts continually the God of answered pray er. 162 pages. Zondervan Pub. House, Grand Rapids, Mich. Cloth. Price $1.

KEN'S MERCY FLIGHT TO AUSTRA- LIA, by Basil Miller. To Ken Murray, not yet old enough to be a soldier, special permission was given by the War Department to aid in taking a supply of the “miracle drug,” peni cillin, to wounded soldiers in Aus tralia. Ken and his crew started out in a twenty-five ton bomber. They were forced down in the Pacific and for several days they drifted about in a tiny rubber raft. Finally rescued by natives of a strange island, the boys’; adventures multiplied. Here is an imaginative tale that presents an unusually fine co-mingling of authen tic local color and clear Gospel mes sage. 64 pages. Zondervan Pub. Co. Grand Rapids, Mich. Cloth. Price 60 cents.

Greek Word Treasures For the student untaught in Greek. By Bernard Ramm, À.B., B.D. In a recent edition of the Reader’s Digest, in one of the usually choice footnotes, appeared the statement that in the expression “for a camel to go through the eye of a needle” (Lk. 18:25), the word, “kamelos” is a mistake for “kamilos,” a cable or rope. It goes on to declare: “His mis take has passed into all the other languages of the world!” No great weight of doctrine hangs on the rendering of the word either by “camel” or “cable,” i but |every Christian likes to be sure about a Biblical matter which has gained at tention in a nationally read magazine. There is only one basis of settling the question and that is by the sci ence of textual criticism. Here is what our library disclosed on this subject: All the great Greek manuscripts of the highest rank and most ancient dating employ the word “camel,” not “cable.” Only one uncial, “S,” con tained cable; “S” dates back to 949 A.D. which is not to be compared with the great fourth century uncials. The Armenian version uses “cable” and several of the cursives. Thus, from the standpoint of textual criticism the evidence for “cable” is relatively, worthless. All of the great commentators we consulted who deal with the problem, without any hesitatiqn reject “cable.” In the latest Catholic revision of the New Testament (1941), based upon the Latin Vulgate, is found the word “camel” not “cable.” The Babylonian Jews had a similar saying, only the word elephant was used instead of camel—which makes the hyperbole all the more astound ing! Finally, the more difficult a read ing seems to be, the more likely it is to be the u n a l t e r e d t ex t . One of the rules of textual criticism is that the accepted reading must ac count for the rejected reading. Now it is certainly more logical that one would change the word from “camel” to “cable” than from “cable” to “camel.” Scribes tend to correct or harmonize. Thus “camel” is the pre ferred reading. To summarize, we insist that the great Greek manuscripts use “camel’' rather than “cable” ; and that this is a good illustration of the integrity and reliability of the New Testament text.
