THE K I N G ’ S BUS I NE S S
Points and Problems 1. “ And Jacob went out from Beer* sheba, and went toward Haran" (Gen. 28:10), Jacob’s departure from Beer- sheba on this occasion was the result of the trouble he had with his brother Esau in the matter of the birthright and the blessing. Rather than stay in the land of blessing and make things right, he decided to run away to Haran (27:43-45). Sin is the most divisive thing in the world. It sep arates its followers from their homes, loved ones, friends, income, peace, Heaven and God. In the case of the Christian, it is the loss of. intimate fellowship with God and a radiant witness for Him. In the case of the unbeliever, it is separation from eter nal life and all hope for the future. 2. “ Behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven" (v. 12). The world’s longest ladder is pictured for us in this state ment. Into the midst of Jacob’s deepest need, the ladder came to find its resting place. In its upward reach, it extended into the very presence of God. At the top was the Lord Jehovah, sufficient for every circumstance; at the bottom was a needy man. It teaches that there is a way of access into the presence of God for sinful men. In its fullest expression this lad der is the Lord Jesus Christ, who was set up on the earth at Bethlehem, and who, by His ascension into Heaven as the climax of His earthly ministry, extended the reach of the ladder into the very presence of God. All other ladders are too short to meet man’s need. Some ladders fail to reach down far enough; man cannot attain even the first rung; others do not reach high enough; they cannot take a man to Heaven. Christ is the perfect ladder (John 1:51). 3. "Behold . . . behold . . . behold . . . behold" (vs. 12-15). It is important to note the fourfold usage of the word “ behold” in this section. By it four things are introduced for our con sideration: (1) Behold a ladder: God and man can come together; (2) Be hold the angels: God has ministering servants for His redeemed ones (Heb. 1:14); (3) Behold Jehovah above the ladder: God will make good every promise 1-Ie has made; and (4) Be hold God's abiding presence and keep ing power: God will never forsake His people or permit His purposes for them to fail. 4. “And he was afraid" (v. 17). It is apparent that Jacob was filled with awe and amazement at what he had seen. It is important to note that his “fear” led him to worship. Probably this experience of Jacob’s at Bethel is equivalent to his conversion.

For the Children N igh ttim e G enesis 28:10-16
MEMORY VERSE: “The day is thine, the night also is thine” (Psa. 74:16). AIM: To teach that God is with His children in the darkness as well as in the light. APPROACH: Some boys and girls are afraid in the dark. Those who love the Lord Jesus will not have this fear, because God’s Word tells us that “The day is thine, the night also is thine.” When you feel afraid in the dark, talk to the Lord Jesus or say some verses from God’s Word, and you will find that you no longer will have any fear. The Bible tells us of a frightened man who was made happy because God spoke to him in a dream one night. LESSON STORY: Jacob was travel-v ing from his home to a strange land many miles away. At night he was lonely and afraid. He had no place to sleep, so he took some stones and placed them upon the ground for a pillow and went to sleep there. While Jacob was sleeping, he had a strange dream. A ladder set upon the earth reached, into Heaven. The angels of God were ascending and descending the ladder. At the top stood the Lord Himself. How excited Jacob must have been at this wonder ful sight! - God spoke to Jacob and told him that he would be given this land upon which he was sleeping, His children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren would be as the dust of the earth in number, and all the world would be made happy be cause of them. The Lord said: “ 1 am with thee and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest—for I will not leave thee.” When Jacob awoke from his sleep after this won derful dream, he said: “Surely the Lord is in this place . . Jacob’s heart was no longer lonely or afraid, for he knew that wherever he was, God was with him.
