MULTI-CLUBS ■ The multi-club sector has seen a 1.5% increase in the total number of clubs, up from 2,249 in 2022 to 2,282 in 2023. This is an all-time high. ■ It has also seen a 5% growth in the number of members, from 5.33 million in 2022 to 5.6 million in 2023. This represents a return to pre-Covid-19 levels. ■ Market value has performed even more strongly, rising 17% – from £2.8bn in 2022 to £3.3bn in 2023 – and now exceeding pre-Covid-19 levels. ■ 8.2% of the UK population are now members of a private multi-club gym (compared to 7.9% in 2022 and 8.4% pre-Covid-19).

INDEPENDENTS ■ The independent sector has seen a 1.3% drop in the number of clubs, down from 2,207 in 2022 to 2,178 in 2023. ■ However, there has been a 1.8% increase in member numbers – from 1.35 million in 2022 to 1.38 million in 2023 – without yet recovering to pre-Covid-19 levels. ■ Meanwhile, market value has not only reached but surpassed pre-Covid-19 levels, rising 5.1% to £732 m (from £696 m in 2022). ■ 2% of the UK population are now members of a private independent gym – the same as in 2022 – compared to 2.1% pre-Covid-19.
