A Growing Practice

In Terms of Spaces and Faces

We recently completed our expansion project, and I’m proud to say it’s now open to patients. As with most construction projects, it was arduous and took much longer than expected. There were certainly a few days when I felt like it would never be finished. But we made it, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. The space is bright, airy, and beautiful. I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to make the expansion a success. This new expansion is just one part, albeit a big one, of an ongoing initiative to make our services more convenient and accessible for our patients. Over the years, I’ve noticed that it’s become harder for people to get away from work for a cleaning, let alone for more extensive work. Regardless of my feelings about employers not letting their team members take time off for their oral health, I recognize that it’s the reality for many people. To ensure that nobody is too busy for dental work, we recently extended our hours. We’ll be open until 7 p.m. on multiple weekdays, and open on Saturday. Whether you need to come in before work, after your shift, or on your day off, we’ll be here for you.

Our expansion is now complete!

You may be wondering how we are going to be able to handle the increase in space and hours. Well, I’m proud to announce the arrival of two new dentists to the Gardens Dental Care Team. Dr. David M. Roshkind and Dr. Shekha Patel are incredibly talented dentists with loads of experience, and both are valuable additions to our team. I’m honored to be able to work alongside them. Dr. David M. Roshkind is a graduate of Cornell University, the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, and theWharton School. He’s been practicing for more than 35 years and is a fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry. In addition to these sterling qualifications, Dr. Roshkind possesses a wide array of skills in all phases of general dentistry. Plus, he’s just a great guy. Dr. Shekha Patel studied microbiology and molecular biology at the University of Central Florida before completing her dental studies at the University of Florida —we won’t venture to say

whether she’s more of a Gator or a Golden Knight. She has special training in the treatment of TMJ disorder and the field of cosmetic dentistry. Dr. Patel also loves working with our youngest patients. As a mother of two, she understands that kids aren’t always psyched to go the dentist. She will be a huge help in making Gardens Dental Care more kid-friendly than it’s ever been. New faces, new spaces, and new hours are arriving at Gardens Dental Care. We encourage you to come in, see the expansion, and meet our new dentists. I can’t tell you how excited I am about everything that’s going on at the practice. After all the headaches involved in the construction, I’m grateful to have crossed the finish line. Despite the tough days, I can say for certain that running the race was worth it. –Dr. David Yates

Welcome Dr. Rushkind!

GET YOUR GRILL ON

2 May Holidays, 2 Reasons to Grill

Is there anything more American than grilling a burger outside on Memorial Day? This year, there’s another reason to fire up the grill that weekend: In addition to being Memorial Day, May 28 is also National Hamburger Day! Enjoy this delicious coincidence by heating up the grill, gathering the fixings, and making one of these tasty burgers at home. THE CLASSIC BURGER Nothing beats the American classic: a seasoned beef patty, a slice of cheddar cheese, a squirt each of mustard and ketchup, a layer of crunchy lettuce, some thinly sliced onions, and a couple of zesty pickles. For a homemade touch, make the pickles yourself by soaking cucumbers in a brine of vinegar, dill, and salt. THE MEDITERRANEAN BURGER Take your patty to the next level with a Mediterranean twist. Mix feta cheese and garlic into your ground beef before forming your patties. Serve it on a grilled ciabatta bun topped with marinated red peppers and arugula for flavor and texture. If you want to get extra fancy, pour a bit of balsamic reduction over the patty before adding the toppings.

THE PORTOBELLO BURGER For a delicious veggie burger even meat eaters will love, use a portobello mushroom as your patty. Remove the stems, then marinate the mushrooms for 15 minutes in a mixture of 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar, 3 tablespoons olive oil, and a clove of minced garlic. Season the shrooms with salt and pepper, then place them on the grill just as you would any other burger. Gruyere cheese is the perfect creamy topping, and you can use grilled focaccia bread topped with garlic aioli. As you bask in the late spring weather and the inviting smell of delicious food this Memorial Day, take a moment to remember the Americans who gave their lives so we could enjoy these freedoms, and thank those who served.

3 Teeth Trends That Will Blow Your Mind How Far Will You Go to Make a Statement?

ears have earrings to accent them, teeth now have gems. It’s common to attach them with an adhesive, although some people go with the permanent route and have them drilled into the enamel. This trend offers a whole new twist on “investing in your smile.” TEETH SHARPENING Have you ever seen someone in public and wondered,“Is that person a vampire?”Odds are that person had their teeth sharpened. This new trend turns teeth from instruments for eating to sharp fashion statements. It doesn’t just apply to your canines, either — it’s not uncommon to sharpen the two front teeth into fangs. You might be surprised to hear that this isn’t a new trend. Vikings sharpened their teeth before heading off to battle in an effort to look more fearsome. Each of these alterations can make an impression on its own, so it might be best to avoid getting all three together. While snaggletooth vampires with bedazzled enamel sure would make a statement, it would probably create more problems than solutions. In fact, in order to encourage proper dental care and avoid long-term damage, it might be best to find another way to express your individuality altogether.

People are always looking for unique ways to show their individualism. Some people distinguish themselves by making statements with their bodies, but when those statements turn into trends, it can create a feeling of monotony. Many trailblazers are left with no choice but to push the boundaries beyond the norm. The results are sometimes revolutionary, sometimes downright weird. Here are three ways people use teeth to set themselves apart. YAEBA Many Americans invest in caps to eliminate pointy “snaggleteeth.” In Japan, however, some

people invest in orthodontic care to get snaggleteeth. This new trend sees many tweens and teens capping their canines to create “yaeba,” which translates to “double teeth.” It’s considered a sign of beauty and devilish charm. There’s even a teen pop band called TYB48 in which each member sports fang-like alterations. GEMS Tooth gems are making a comeback from the ‘90s. These aren’t full- blown grills of diamonds or gold, but simple jewelry additions. Just as
