Thursday 8.19 a.m. Train delayed by points failure. Something was defective somewhere, but I wasn’t worried. I sipped my Greater Anglia coffee and reflected. Events had gone incredibly smoothly, in no small part due to Natalie’s organisation of the exercise. The CEO and the new MD had made really clear announcements to the workforce, and the transparency had been appreciated, even by those who would have been worried about their futures. The employee representative body had been formed, and again, thanks to Natalie, the clarity of the situation had
left very little to be ironed out. We were now more or less in holding orbit until September, when London would be closed and the business moved to Peterborough I had spoken to the transitional group of 11, all of whom were happy to take the extension to help bed in the business in Peterborough and had kicked off discussions with about half of the 28 who had been offered relocation. So far, about half of those seemed keen to go, and others had decisions to make with their families. Natalie’s contract was till the end of September. No argument. That seemed
sensible considering the scale of the operation, and she was guiding discussions with the representative body, which were sure to go on till the last minute. On the day-to-day front, things were ticking along nicely. I’d had an all-hands meet with my department people the Monday after the announcement. Rumours had half prepared them for something of the sort, and there was relief that they could now start planning. I told them that I had been offered to move, which caused little surprise. I had no fears for any of them finding another job;
