CLIPPINGS AND MUSINGS NOVEMBER 2020 – HELEN DUVAL

A s we head towards the end of the year there are some positive news stories to consider. The first and only expo of the fenestration sector of the year in the UK has been launched; there is hope of a new vaccine for Covid-19, “wildbelts” could become part of planning strategy and whilst average house prices are expected to increase 4% before stagnating in 2021, currently the housing market and new builds look more buoyant than previously expected. This sector has a strong track record of bouncing back from shocks and knocks. Businesses are currently evaluating their profits and their margins, and how best to tackle the continuing effect of Coronavirus. Home-working has been accepted as being quite successful, but as social beasts, there is a need to interact. So in a lockdown, where better to do that than via a virtual expo? It is inevitable that things will take time to return to how they were pre-vaccine, (if it is just around the corner), but how quickly this happens is anyone’s guess. We can’t wait if we want to keep the wheels of industry turning. Staying sensible and sticking to it has to be the answer.

Cities are adapting and being able to travel on public transport will continue to be impacted. We have to learn from this disease and develop ways to adapt, invest and build on the future we have available to us. Currently, commercial property values are holding very well, with a strong potential in relation to investment. Refurbishment opportunities are picking up in this sector of the market. Technology, performance, trends, culture and art influence many aspects of the glazing industry with design remaining a focal aspect. Whether a modern, new-build or the redevelopment of a listed property modern design and manufacturing methods are playing their part and it matters. At the moment, the fenestration landscape is evolving and trying to keep pace with social media. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or Snapchat are now the forces shaping our business awareness, alongside the new kid on the block - Tik Tok. It does give all of us more control over what we are saying or when we are achieving successes. Commercial design faces new challenges as well as rewards, when it comes to making a statement.

Whether it is a striking engineering project, new skyscraper or the redevelopment of a hotel spa chain design remains a fundamental aspect for the sector as it must accommodate the expectations of modern travellers,. It needs to be new and must be dynamic in novel ways. Architects and interior designers continue to be challenged to create looks that address our modern desire to own something superb. Equally, there is a desire to create something new that offers a feeling of security and familiarity – in simple terms, …comfort and luxury. Buildings must answer the need of longing for the best of the past, while combining that with a desire to sample something vital and new. Online information is swift and for some it is a terrifying prospect to have to face – it is a change considered too fast and too difficult to grasp when being adapted for established industries. For architects and designers they now have so much at their disposal that can be drawn upon in terms of research, art forms and cultural elements, that all are relevant in modern building concepts. Manufacturers have to keep pace. The next generation has never been without technology and they harness it in ways that we must learn if we are to survive in any brave new world. Style, product innovation and performance dynamics will influence investment and must be readily available on the internet to view – so, even if a

retro design is required, whether it is acoustic glazing for a trendy workout space, the window Pantone color chart for 2016, or a charitable cause that a product manufacturer or firm of architects is keen to support - it all has bearing for the sector and needs to be a part of the manufacturers online conversation today. Why? - because we must cater for tomorrow’s market. Carrying on with a theme and in recognition of innovation, the Award season is here and is about to get very interesting. Online, there is a great, familiar buzz across the glass and glazing sector regarding the National Fenestration Awards. This year, the digital experience is about to be enhanced, with the good and the great of the industry still able to join together to celebrate innovation in industry technology, engineering and design. The NFA Awards recognize national achievement and industry projects across many categories, with some additional focus placed on training initiatives, digital specialists and young achievers. Additionally, the Awards acknowledge consistent quality and business accomplishments or achievements beyond regular job requirements. The winning announcements this year will take place during the FENEX EXPO on 26th and 27th November. So stay tuned to the social feeds, YouTube and periscope - it’s all very exciting!

The NFAs have announced that there will be a winners event in 2021 to celebrate the success of the 2020 campaign. The format and timings of the event will be confirmed once more clarity around the pandemic is available. The awards, however, promise that this will be the party of the year for the entire industry and more information will be teased soon. Details on when the 2021 campaign will begin are due to be announced soon.

The announcement was made on the FENEX YouTube channel, with a superb video produced by Team4 Marketing which was set to premiere at 8pm on Monday evening. There was a high number of people waiting to watch as the video streamed live. In almost perfect choreography, the winners were announced in tandem with the winners video. It resulted in an event that was a first for the fenestration industry and created huge hype and impact that evening and the following morning. Speaking about the results and the event, co- founder Jason Grafton-Holt said: “this was a unique event for the industry, something that we believe had never been done before and it created such a positive and widespread impact that is still rippling through the sector. In what has been such a tough year for everyone, with almost everything cancelled or postponed, it was a genuine privilege to be able to bring our industry the highlight of the year. It was fantastic to see the industry get behind the NFAs and the goodwill and energy shown on social media during and after the event was something special. What a great early Christmas present for so many great people and companies!”

AWARD HAT-TRICK FOR MORLEY GLASS & GLAZING

M orley Glass & Glazing is celebrating having achieved three first-place finishes at the 2020 National Fenestration Awards. The integral blinds manufacturer came out on top in all three categories it was nominated in: Integral Blinds Company, Best Use of Video and IGU Manufacturer, which it shared jointly with Clayton Glass. It is the business’s fourth consecutive year taking home the IGU Manufacturer prize, and third time as winner of the Integral Blinds Company category. The business was also one of three companies named a COVID Hero by the awards, as acknowledgement of their investment in virtual showrooms for installers during and after the national lockdown. Finally, Morley Glass received a Special Mention for its tireless charity work for local causes throughout 2020. The open platform NFAs are the fenestration industry’s fastest-growing independent awards and are unique as winners are decided completely by the public. Organisers of the awards have revealed that 7,658 individual votes were registered for 163 finalists between 18th September and 24th November, the most ever recorded in their seven-year history.

The winners’ announcement was made via the FENEX YouTube channel on Monday 7th December, after plans to announce winners at the doors, windows and hardware exhibition could no longer go ahead. Ian Short, managing director at Morley Glass & Glazing comments: “These awards are a fantastic way to bring a turbulent year for the industry to a close. Despite the obvious challenges, 2020 has seen our manufacturing capacity increase from an average of 2,400 to 3,500 integral blinds a week and our turnover has grown to reflect this. Our success is a real team effort and we’re very proud and grateful of the excellent supply chain we have behind us. “This year we have also taken the time to invest in our Morley Glass & Glazing YouTube channel, with the help of video marketing specialist Video Production 4, so winning the award for Best Use of Video was a great recognition of all our hard work.” All the winners in the 25 unique categories and two specialist categories in the National Fenestration Awards will be invited to a special Winners Event held by the award organisers in the New Year.

MORLEY GLASS CRUSHER REACHES 200 TONNES RECYCLING MARK

I ntegral blinds specialist Morley Glass & Glazing has prevented more than 200 tonnes of post-consumer glass from going to landfill and 64,226kg of CO2 emissions from going into the atmosphere, whilst raising money for “green” projects. The recycling landmark has been reached after the sealed unit manufacturer dedicated part of its Leeds manufacturing space earlier this year to serve as a collection centre for waste glass or “cullet”, which it then returns to Saint-Gobain Glass to be reused in the manufacture of new glass. All the money Morley Glass receives for the cullet is placed in a green fund and donated in £500 grants to support charities looking to invest in environmental and sustainable initiatives. Using recycled glass has a direct and positive impact on the environment and the amount of energy used in the glass manufacturing process. A furnace melting recycled glass will require 30% less energy than one which is melting raw materials, and using one tonne of cullet can save up to 1.2 tonnes of raw material, including 850 kg of sand. This means that CO2 emissions can be reduced by approximately 300kg, which is equivalent to the amount of energy needed to power the average home for six months. This means Morley Glass has recycled enough cullet to power an average home for 100 years!

When Morley Glass & Glazing heard that Saint- Gobain Glass had decided to increase the amount of cullet used in its float glass production and needed to find a way to obtain it quickly and easily, the business knew it could help. So whenever Morley customers take delivery of their integral blinds, they can then use the company’s empty delivery vehicles to send the waste glass they have removed from residential properties back to the Morley collection centre. The cullet return scheme saves Morley Glass customers the cost and inconvenience of disposing of waste glass via landfill or other commercial recycling schemes, which may charge for the service. Ian Short, managing director at Morley Glass & Glazing said: “We still have a long way to go in our green journey but we hope that by sharing our experiences we’ll be able to inspire others to do the same. 2020 has been an unprecedented year for many industries, but we hope to be able to continue making a difference where we can. It makes perfect sense to recycle post- manufacturing and post-consumer glass, and the added benefit is that local good causes will also benefit.” If you aren’t already taking advantage of the cullet return scheme but would like to know more, visit www.morleyglass.co.uk/glass-recycling-leeds.

E dgetech’s world-renowned Super Spacer has played a crucial role in the construction of one of the Middle East’s most spectacular new buildings. The celebrated product was used to deliver the stunning 5,500 square-meter glass façade of the Qatar National Library. The 42,000 square meter structure is home to over a million books, and 500,000 digital editions. The library’s most valuable volumes are kept in a six-meter deep, glass-ceilinged room reminiscent of an excavated labyrinth. Its diamond-shaped façade area has been designed to filter out the glaring Middle Eastern sun, while still letting in enough light to illuminate the library interior. The façade has been designed without any metallic elements, ensuring there are no thermal bridges to conduct heat into the building – a crucial consideration, since not only does Qatar routinely experience summer temperatures in excess of 40 degrees Celsius, it’s unfortunately a part of the world that’s being severely affected by global warming. Its double-glazed IGUs are curved, ensuring that the façade is both self-supporting, and exceptionally resistant to wind and other strong weather. TRISEAL™ PROTECTS PRICELESS MANUSCRIPTS IN AMBITIOUS QATAR NATIONAL LIBRARY BUILDING

A low-e coating, and a solar control coating, filter and reflect sunlight, and a grey grid of 3mm metallic dots, with a precise 6mm spacing, was burnt into them in order to reduce radiation transmission even further. The need for both exceptional thermal performance and a product that was compatible with the building’s curved IGUs made Super Spacer® TriSeal™ Flex an obvious choice, as Edgetech Managing Director Chris Alderson explains. “In places like Qatar, the constant fluctuations between incredible heat in the day and much cooler evenings exerts considerable pressure on the edge seal. Super Spacer’s structural foam is able to absorb that pumping motion, allowing IGUs to withstand the pressure. “This is one reason that Super Spacer has been specified in some of the world’s most iconic, architecturally ambitious buildings – and we’re delighted to see it used to such stunning effect in Qatar’s National Library.” Edgetech’s Super Spacer® flexible foam-based spacer systems act as energy-efficient warm edge spacers in insulating glass windows. They significantly reduce energy loss to the outside, largely prevent condensation and also contribute to the lifetime of a window. On average, worldwide, more than 300 million metres are sold annually in over 90 countries. For more information please call + 44 (0) 2476 639931 or visit www.edgetechig.co.uk.

The new training programme is to be delivered initially via Building Our Skills' Sheffield academy and then will be rolled out to a network of centres throughout the country delivering consistent content. In the light of findings from a recent YouGov survey commissioned by GQA Qualifications, the introduction of the new training programme is very timely. The survey results reveal a clear desire for more vocational training opportunities amongst parents with school-age children.

Commenting on the programme development, John Ogilvie, Director of Building Our Skills said:

"This is a great step forward for the industry. The new programme, coupled with our plans for a nationwide network of practical training centres demonstrates our commitment to raising standards in fenestration. In addition, it is good to know that we have the backing of parents who, as revealed by the YouGov survey, agree that vocational training, careers and/or vocational qualifications can be beneficial to young people as an alternative path to going to university. Clearly the new programme also represents a great ongoing learning opportunity for existing industry employees who can use it as part of their Continuing Professional Development. It's gratifying that we are able to offer training to support industry employees to do their jobs to the highest standards." Additions to the new training programme are expected soon in the form of training for surveyors, Tilt 'n' Turn maintenance, advanced installation techniques and curtain wall installation. ODL EUROPE DONATES $1,000 TO GM FUNDRAISING

T o help mark its 75th anniversary year, ODL Europe has donated $1,000 to GM Fundraising to support Hope House Children’s Hospices. Nathan Barr, Managing Director of ODL Europe, said: “We are delighted to make this donation to GM Fundraising to mark our 75th anniversary. Hope House Children’s Hospices is such an important cause because no one should have to face the death of a child on their own.” Gary Morton, founder of GM Fundraising said: “We’re very grateful to ODL Europe for this donation. We’d like to thank the team for their generosity and, of course, congratulate them on their 75th anniversary milestone.” The donation to GM Fundraising was part of a global initiative by ODL to make $1,000 donations to numerous charities to mark their 75th anniversary year. As a result, over 75 charities worldwide have now benefited from the company’s donations. Nathan said: “The 75th anniversary is a significant milestone for our parent company ODL but due to the pandemic, it isn’t the anniversary year the team had planned. It was always our intention to mark the occasion by helping various

charities, and we’re delighted to help support Hope House Children’s Hospices at this time.”

Hope House Children’s Hospices provides specialist nursing care and support to children with life limiting conditions. They help their parents and families too, both throughout the lifetime of a child and often well beyond. Since it was established in 1995, GM Fundraising has raised nearly £2 million for Hope House Children’s Hospices. Over 95% of Hope House’s £6.5 million annual operating costs are met through charitable donations and GM Fundraising is its largest single donor. GM Fundraising is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and had hoped to raise over £200,000 for the charity, but the majority of its challenges and events had to be postponed due to pandemic. Gary concludes: “Like all charities, Hope House has been hard hit by the pandemic. But donations such as ODL Europe’s remind us that companies still want to help people less fortunate than themselves and we thank them for their generous contribution.”

MASTER FITTER CHALLENGE – RISING STARS CHALLENGE LAUNCHED

T he ever-popular Master Fitter Challenge is back. Now officially launched and open for entries, the Master Fitter Challenge 2020/21 now features not only its traditional competition for experienced installers, but a brand new and exciting ‘Rising Stars’ challenge for those who have been installing for under two years. The Master Fitter Challenge 2020/21 will see finals take place during April 2021 with winners presented with their awards and prizes at the FIT Show in May next year. Launched at the inaugural FIT Show the contest will allow participating installers to nominate Timber, Aluminium or PVCu products as their specialist field of expertise in order to generate a 'best in class' result for each category. The rules for the Master Fitter Challenge will be similar to previous years, but with a greater emphasis on the use of video judging in earlier rounds in order to accommodate ongoing social distancing requirements. Online interviews will also be carried out, which will feature non- scripted questions about installing, building regulations and other key areas. These techniques will be complemented by on-site judging in later rounds, and will cover off such demanding elements as bay and bow windows, bi-folding

doors, box sashes or other products nominated by the installer in the material in which they chose to specialise. A head to head live final will be held in April 2021 featuring the two most successful competitors at which they will be required to install products in at least three material types. The new 'Rising Stars' challenge will also see entrants judged by means of a mixture of video content, online interview, shared on-screen visuals and on-site activity. Support and mentoring will be offered to entrants as they pass through the challenge's early rounds to help in their skills development. Entrants of this competition will be asked to install a window, traditional door or a composite door. As with the Master Fitter Challenge a head to head will be held for the final two winners in April 2021. GQA, the fenestration industry’s leading awarding body, is managing the Master Fitter Challenge once again. Mick Clayton, Chief Executive Officer of GQA says: "We all know when it comes to installation the highest standards are so important, arguably the most important thing in the industry. HAFFNER MURAT WINS MACHINERY SUPPLIER OF THE YEAR IN THE NFA AWARDS 2020 L eading machinery experts Haffner Murat This year saw the highest number of votes ever – up 2,000 votes on previous years, perhaps reflecting the importance of finding something to celebrate in a tough year for the industry.

has just been announced as the joint winner of the Machinery Supplier of the Year category of the National Fenestration Awards 2020. Dave Thomas, Managing Director of Haffner Murat, said: “We are delighted to win this award, particularly as it’s voted for by our industry peers, so it’s a real vote of confidence. I’d like to thank everyone who voted for Haffner in the awards – it’s been a difficult year for everyone so thank you for taking the time. Congratulations also goes to our fellow winner, Elumatec.” The win is particularly meaningful for Haffner Murat because it’s happened in the company’s 30th anniversary year. Dave says: “This hasn’t been the anniversary year we were expecting but this win is a great way to end 2020.” The National Fenestration Awards recognises all areas of the UK fenestration industry. As Dave says, there is no judging panel. Shortlists are drawn up based on the number of nominations from registered users who can then vote to decide their overall winner.

The winners were announced with a special live video premiere in collaboration with FENEX 2021 – the fenestration industry’s first-ever virtual trade show. Haffner Murat is a team of industry and technical machine experts who really understand the fabrication industry and are committed to adding value to their customers. It is the sole UK agent of Haffner and Murat Machinery, which designs innovative and high-quality engineered products at some of the most competitive industry prices. It is also the agent for FOM and Italmac aluminium fabrication machinery, two companies with international reputations for quality machinery that combines the latest technology with skilled engineering. With 30 years in the business, Haffner Murat has an enviable reputation for quality and reliability – something that’s just been proved with this award win.

OPTIMUM GUARANTEES FROM HEGLA WITH THE RAPIDSTORE I ncreasing efficiency and output during the current ‘uncertain’ business climate will be a priority for manufacturers, with many companies carefully considering the impact of many things on their business - not least Brexit and coping strategies with the continual impact of the coronavirus.

HEGLA regularly evaluates the changing market and adapts to the needs of processors accordingly, with the team focused on providing complete, tailored solutions and support. With more glass coatings being used today, and different types of specialist glass now required for commercial and domes-tic projects, being able to supply a variety of glazing options is essential. GREATER GROWTH POTENTIAL The Rapidstore, as an automated storage system, simplifies manufacturing methods and gives business owners greater capacity. For many companies one of the biggest issues during production is being able to supply multiple glass types to the cutting table. The Rapidstore, together with a standard double sided loader, ensures glass can be held in bulk. For example, 4mm float and soft coat in the double sided loader, as well as slower glass types and patterned glass can all be held in multi positions in the Rapidstore. Therefore, multiple products are quickly and accurately incorporated into the production run without the need to slow down the manufacturing process, and with the right software, this guarantees a smooth transition between products.

The pedigree of the Helga brand is well recognised both nationally and internationally with glass processors, and now more than ever, investments made have to be reliable and guarantee the best quality. Furthermore, the experience of the engineers ensures that a business can stay ahead during challenging economic times. STAYING AHEAD A glass processor could need to use many specialist glasses for a number of customer’s projects and this is critical to cycle running times. Typical Rapidstore configurations have 20-30 or more glass types in a limited area and eliminates the need to keep manually moving glass, which ultimately means less damage. Also, this system eliminates the need to stop production to search for the right glass type for a particular project, or to select the right glass from separate storage areas. A bonus to the Rapidstore System is that it has stock control of the products within the Rapidstore/Loader that can be equally applied to glass outside the loading system!

GENERAL

For high volume manufacturers with a large product range, this automated storage system provides many advantages. For manufacturers with limited space, storage can be outside the working areas of the cranes or even adjacent to the cutting line. In relation to jumbo sized glasses, the Rapidstore can be installed in combination with the gantry loading systems - there are many installation combinations that are possible. The HEGLA engineering team is skilled in creating layout designs that will suit the needs of a business as a company grows, planning for what you do now and also what will or can come later, is all important. FAST AND EFFICIENT Quick and efficient production is now essential when it comes to the smooth operation of factories in the UK or anywhere else in the World. Machines must have higher output with a minimum of the same manpower, preferably with less manpower.

Paul Gibbs, Sales at HEGLA UK comments, “The new generation of glasses require precision engineering to guarantee the quality of the glass on all sized projects. Specifiers, designers and end users are demanding more from products today and processors need to be able to keep pace with them.” Bernhard Hoetger, COO, HEGLA Group concludes, “The HEGLA team works closely with key industry decision makers and customers then carefully creates plans that will improve automation standards across the sector. Accommodating customer needs is a priority for the HEGLA group, who work hard to accommodate customer needs and ensure that reliability and increased productivity will consistently guarantee exceptional results.” To improve manufacturing efficiency or to discover more about the Rapidstore system and other systems in the HEGLA range please call Paul Gibbs on: 0330 124 5759.

ODL EUROPE EXHIBITING AT FENEX O DL Europe has signed up to FENEX, the new industry virtual exhibition which kicks off on in January with the Doors, heritage styling. Also available is the Moderne contemporary door which delivers modern aesthetics and the Guardsman FD Fire Door has what it takes to revolutionise the fire door sector. It’s the result of a six-figure investment in research and development and a vital collaboration with Winkhaus, which is home to the FireFrame fire door.

Windows and Hardware mini Expo. Nathan Barr, Managing Director of ODL Europe said: “We are looking forward to welcoming visitors to our virtual stand and showing them what ODL Europe has to offer. We are launching some exciting new products this year, including our new Guardsman FD Fire Door, which has the ability to revolutionise this sector and FENEX visitors can see this for the first time.” The new Doors, Windows and Hardware Expo will run throughout Friday 8th and Saturday 9th January 2021. Nathan said: “At a time when face- to-face events are simply not an option, virtual exhibitions offer an exciting opportunity to engage with potential new business. We all have to think differently on how we engage with our audience and FENEX provides an easy to use, highly interactive experience for both exhibitors and visitors”. As Nathan mentions, the company are launching several new composite doors this year to help add value to their customers’ businesses. The new doors include the new Deco Door which is a cottage-style door offering sophisticated

Commenting on the new Guardsman FD Fire Door, Nathan said: ”Our ambition was to develop a fire door that didn’t use phenolic foam in its core which we know is an unstable product. Instead, we have used solid core Agrifiber technology, which is stronger and more stable. The doors are currently being tested under the EN1634 European standards for fire resistance and smoke control with some extraordinary results being achieved.” The new doors will be available to see along with ODL Europe’s additional market-leading products including Blink® blinds + glass, glazing cassettes and their new composite door glass. Nathan concludes: “FENEX promises to be a step- change in exhibition platforms and as a forward- thinking business, we are proud to be taking part in the inaugural event.

WHY MASTERFRAME AND TIMBERWELD® ARE EXHIBITING AT FENEX

M asterframe and Timberweld are both set to exhibit at the FENEX Doors, Windows & Hardware Expo this coming January and at the main event in April. The response from the industry to this brand new platform has been overwhelmingly positive, with 22 brands already signed up to FENEX, with many more to come. We asked Alan Burgess, from Masterframe, why both brands have decided to exhibit at FENEX and to comment on where the path for fenestration now lies, here’s what he had to say:

Six months ago the world changed. Showroom closed, face to face meetings ended, the outlook was at best uncertain! I had never heard of Zoom, Teams or Webinex, and didn’t understand why anyone would ever need to have a showroom online! Yet new communication channels quickly opened up. Forward-looking companies recreated themselves, offered improved solutions so that their client base has the best chance of succeeding. Subsequently, Masterframe sponsored showroom tours for nearly 20 of its partners, with interactive hotspots, video clips and close-ups, even promo

Everything installers needed to get them working again. Obviously, lockdown meant it was impossible to feel the quality of our windows, the added confidence from the weight of the parts, the lustre of finishing’s, however using sample displays and online tours, meant our customers we still able to showcase our products and communicate the value of the solid build quality.

That’s why Timberweld is exhibiting at FENEX 2021.

So many installers and fabricators are stuck in their ways. So many just offer a standard 45-degree mitred joint, (a dead give-away its plastic) or do “half a job”, just having a butt joint on the outside face. We see FENEX 2021 as a great new way to showcase Timberweld, to fabricators and installers alike because demand has risen for welded, authentic joints.

We also see it as a great way to promote
