MAJOR CONTRACTS WON DURING ‘70S BY LOWRY BUILDING & CIVIL ENGINEERING PAVE THE WAY FOR EXPANSION AND GROWTH… 1970s – onwards and upwards

recognised for their long service to the company along with special presentations made to Jack, his wife Tillie and Jimmy. Today, under the successful management of Ian and his wife Helen Lowry, the firm has expanded greatly, with 80 staff working out of a number of office locations including John Street and Main Street, Castlederg and newly refurbished offices on Boucher Road, Belfast. Lowry Building & Civil Engineering’s completed projects include some of Northern Ireland’s most iconic and landmark builds. It also operates a large, modern, fully equipped fleet of plant, vehicles and equipment all in bespoke ‘Lowry Blue’ livery, which covers all needs and further strengthens the firm’s capability to fulfill the most demanding of projects.

1970s –major contracts 1974: Extension and renovation of Killen Primary School (in early 2000s Lowrys also delivered the new build Killen Primary School) 1976: Dergview Housing Development in Castlederg 1977: Re-development of the Derg Arms, Castlederg 1978: Construction of 30 No Dwellings at Crevenish Road, Kesh 1979: New factory on the Drumquin Road, Castlederg for LEDU

In 1972 they secured the first of their large contracts: the construction of 30 houses and 22 garages together with all associated siteworks at Killen Park, Killen, Castlederg. The total contract value was £118,000. On a pro-rata basis at today’s values this would be a contract in the region of £3.5 - 4m – so a significant contract indeed. As the ‘70s progressed the major contracts kept on coming. It was also during the end of the decade that the company started hiring plant and equipment to NI Water. In 1996, Lowry celebrated 35 years in business with a special function held in the Corner Bar, Ardstraw where a number of employees were
