Jamie also has our 'thing' and I always enjoy reading about her sobriety and openness about 'our thing.' "Do you ask hotels to remove your minibar before you check in? Oh yes, I am a very careful sober person. When I work, if there are no recovery meetings available, I make them. Fashion in 2024 is witnessing a delightful In the ever-evolving world of fashion, the theories of the element of surprise, the yin and yang, and the concept that opposites attract are becoming essential guides for creating stylish outfits in 2024. These principles not only inject creativity and excitement into one's wardrobe but also reflect the dynamic and eclectic nature of contemporary style. The element of surprise encourages fashion enthusiasts to incorporate unexpected elements into their outfits. It's about juxtaposing contrasting textures, colors, or styles to create visually stimulating ensembles. Pairing a structured blazer with distressed jeans or mixing high-end and thrifted pieces can result in a fashion that captivates and inspires. The yin and yang concept focuses on achieving balance and harmony in clothing choices. Combining soft and hard, light and dark, or masculine and feminine elements can create outfits that resonate with both depth and contrast. This concept allows for versatile and adaptable style expressions, catering to individual preferences and moods. The idea that opposites attract celebrates the power of contrast in fashion. It encourages experimenting with pairing items that might seem unconventional but ultimately complement each other. For instance, teaming a delicate lace top with rugged combat boots or a vibrant floral dress with edgy leather accessories can produce captivating and unforgettable looks. In 2024, these fashion theories are not just about dressing up but about crafting a visual story that is unique, expressive, and full of personality. They empower individuals to embrace the unexpected, find balance in their style choices, and celebrate the beauty of opposites coming together in the name of fashion. NEW YEAR NEW TRENDS

COFFEE Coffee has emerged as a cult beauty product, lauded for its natural exfoliation, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. It's a go-to choice for radiant skin, reduced cellulite, and healthier hair and scalp. This versatile ingredient has found its place in skincare routines, transforming the way we approach beauty.

HOLA SOBER | MADRID

January kick start with the Coffee Body + Face Scrub Ingredients 1/2 cup fresh ground coffee (Fresh are best, but dry used grounds will work, too) 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup melted coconut oil or Olive Oil 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Instructions Mix 1/2 cup fresh ground coffee and 1/2 cup brown sugar. 1. Add 1/2 cup coconut oil into the coffee mixture and 1 tsp. vanilla extract. 2. 3.Mix until well combined. Gently rub the mixture over your body— avoid areas around the eyes. Leave it on for several minutes. Rinse thoroughly. (Be careful if using the scrub in the shower, as the oil can make the floor a bit slippery.) 4.

Who doesn't love a shot of decent coffee in the morning? The joy of drinking good coffee on a sunny terrace without a throbbing headache (hangover) never ceases to fill me with joy. As we navigated the 'home salon' through the pandemic, many women continued to create store cupboard magic for their beauty range. I have a bean-to-cup coffee maker and have found multiple ways in which I can use the coffee grounds in my life! They make a fantastic exfoliant and work to remove dead cells which helps rejuvenate and boost skin circulation. They can also be used to scrub your scalp before washing your hair (do not use on blond hair as it can stain -I'm good as I'm a redhead!) My husband is using them to feed some house plants that are flagging in the winter sunshine. To use coffee grounds as fertilizer, simply sprinkle them onto the soil surrounding your plants as they contain several key nutrients required for plant growth. Bowls can be set in the garden among your flowers as they as said to repel insets and bugs!

HOLA SOBER | MADRID

AS you head into 2024 know thata your morning cuppa leaves can often leave you with coffee grounds that can be an effective addition to your beauty routine. Their natural properties make them a versatile beauty product that offers numerous benefits for the skin and hair. Exfoliation: Coffee grounds have a gritty texture that makes them ideal for exfoliating the skin. When gently massaged onto the skin, they help remove dead cells, unclog pores, and promote a smoother, more radiant complexion. Cellulite Reduction: Many beauty enthusiasts use coffee grounds as a natural cellulite treatment. The caffeine in coffee stimulates blood flow and can temporarily tighten and tone the skin, reducing the appearance of cellulite. Anti-Inflammatory : Coffee grounds possess anti- inflammatory properties, making them helpful for soothing irritated or red skin. They can be used as a face mask or added to skincare products to calm and reduce redness. Scalp and Hair Health: Coffee grounds can also benefit the scalp and hair. They help remove excess product buildup and dead skin cells, promoting a healthier scalp and potentially encouraging hair growth. Some people even use coffee grounds as a natural hair dye to add depth and shine to their locks. Anti-Aging: The antioxidants in coffee are known for their anti-aging properties. When used in skincare products, coffee grounds can help fight free radicals and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. To incorporate coffee grounds into your beauty routine, mix them with other natural ingredients like yogurt, honey, or coconut oil to create masks, scrubs, or hair treatments. However, be gentle when using them on your skin to avoid causing any microtears. As with any beauty product, it's important to do a patch test to ensure you don't have any adverse reactions. Coffee grounds offer an eco-friendly and affordable way to enhance your beauty regimen while harnessing the benefits of nature's ingredients. Should we all be asking for health trackers?

Healthcare

Should we all be asking for health trackers for Christmas? Personalised healthcare is the newest trend on the health block and for good reason. When it comes to health, wellness, and nutrition, our needs are as individual as our fingerprints. So it’s no surprise that health wearables are a huge and rapidly evolving business. From heart rate monitors, smart watches, tracker rings, and even continuous glucose monitors it seems as though the options are endless, but are they worth your time and money? Let’s take a look at some of the pros and cons. Pros: Fitness Tracking and Motivation Health wearables excel in encouraging physical activity by providing real-time feedback on steps taken, time spent in each exercise or heart rate zone, and various other exercise metrics. The gamification elements, such as setting and achieving goals, increase motivation for maintaining an active lifestyle. They generate a wealth of data that can offer valuable insights into our health trends, meaning users can identify patterns, set realistic health goals, and make informed decisions about lifestyle changes based on personalised analytics Health Monitoring and Early Detection Many wearables offer continuous health monitoring, including heart rate, heart rate variability (a measure of stress and recovery), sleep patterns, and stress levels. This allows users to detect irregularities early on, facilitating proactive health management and potentially preventing certain conditions.

Advanced health wearables can be linked in to various software platforms used by healthcare professionals and used to better tailor any health interventions. Through having access to wearable data when working with athletes I am better able to see when their recovery is poor, when we need to add more carbohydrates into training sessions, and even predict when they’re about to be poorly so they can back off their training schedules slightly! Convenience and Accessibility Wearables provide a convenient and accessible means of monitoring health parameters without the need for frequent visits to healthcare facilities. This accessibility is especially beneficial for people with chronic conditions who would otherwise need continuous monitoring. Cons: Accuracy and Reliability Arguably the biggest drawback of health wearables is their accuracy. We can’t make the right healthcare decisions if the data we’re basing those decisions on is wrong. The accuracy of health wearables varies massively, with different brands excelling in slightly different areas. Each brand has its own, very closely guarded, algorithms for working out secondary data (such as sleep patterns) from the primary data (the metrics they can measure, usually heart rate and variability, combined with activity from GPS data). For quite a few of my athletes, their resting heart rates were so low when they were sitting on the sofa that their smartwatches thought they were asleep, so any data about their sleeping times was

| AUGUST 2021 • HOLA SOBER |

HOLA SOBER | MADRID

always wrong! Although that’s an extreme example, it’s always worth bearing in mind that no algorithm can account for all of our individualities, so any secondary data should always be taken with a pinch of salt. Dependency and Anxiety: Constant monitoring can lead to dependency on wearable devices, fostering anxiety when people are unable to access or use them. This dependency can, surprisingly often, result in an unhealthy obsession with metrics and potential stress related to meeting daily health goals. One particular aspect this seems to apply to is the number of calories burned per day. Privacy Concerns The collection and storage of personal health data raise significant privacy concerns. There's a risk of unauthorised access or data breaches, but there are also an increasing number of health insurance companies that are using the data to influence policy coverage and costs. For example, some companies will reduce insurance premiums for people who consistently do 10,000 steps per day. That’s great if your wearable is accurate but if, as in the example from my athletes, it's not interpreting data correctly, it could be a problem. Overall, health trackers and wearables can be a fantastic addition to our lives when used as an added extra to keep us motivated. The biggest drawback I see with clients is when they start relying on the data from the watch or tracker to dictate health behaviours more than how they feel. If your watch tells you that you had a great night’s sleep, but you woke up feeling crap, it’s ok to take it easy that day rather than attacking your to-do list full throttle just because your watch told you that you should be full of energy!

Should we go all plant- based in

2024 Part I

by Sophie Pelham-Burn

4. Chronic Disease Risk Consuming a predominantly plant-based diet is associated with a decreased risk of chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. This is due to the phytochemicals and antioxidants present in plant foods having a demonstrated protective effect against cellular damage and inflammation. 5 . Culinary Creativit y: A lot of people I work with visibly wince when I say that vegetables should make up about half of your plate at most mealtimes. But it doesn’t need to be boring! I know full well the benefits of eating lots of vegetables, but you won’t find me sitting down to a plate of plain steamed veg any time soon. Including more plants in your diet can often encourage people to step out of a culinary rut and start experimenting with new ingredients, spices, flavourings, sauces, and cooking techniques. Encouraging more variety in our cooking is great news for our gut microbiome and all of the aspects of well-being that go along with it. Cons: 1. Plant-based doesn’t necessarily mean more healthy The focus on plant-based foods doesn't guarantee a healthy diet. Food manufacturers have hopped onto the plant-based trend and many of the foods that are marketed as healthy plant-based options are ultra-high processed foods, high in sugar, and full of additives and stabilizers that won’t do your gut health many favours. 2. Nutrient deficiencies Depending on your age, health history, and individual requirements, cutting out or heavily reducing your consumption of animal products may compromise your intake of certain essential nutrients such as iron, iodine, vitamin B12, and omega 3’s. It’s not an insurmountable problem, but possibly worth speaking to a nutritionist about if you’re planning to go significantly more plant-based.

In recent years, the spotlight on health and environmental concerns has sparked a surge of interest in plant-based diets. This dietary approach has garnered attention from health experts, environmentalists, and individuals seeking a healthier lifestyle. So should we all go plant-based? First things first, what does a plant-based diet mean? Whilst the phrase has been adopted by the vegan community, plant-based means a diet predominantly based around plant foods but including some animal products. There is no doubt that this dietary pattern has its merits for both our health and the health of the planet, but what are the pros and cons, and how far do we need to go to reap the benefits? Pros 1 . Nutrient-Rich Plant Powerhouses There is no doubt that a diet rich in plants can provide a wealth of essential nutrients. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds deliver an array of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and dietary fiber that promote almost every aspect of well-being and gut health. 2. Heart Healthy Numerous studies have linked plant-based diets to improved cardiovascular health. The emphasis on foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and healthy fats like those found in olive oil and nuts can help lower cholesterol levels, regulate blood pressure, and reduce the risk of heart-related issues. That, combined with reducing the consumption of saturated fats found in meat, contributes to these heart- protective benefits. 3. Weight Management A plant-based diet can play a role in weight management and obesity prevention. The high fiber content of whole grains, nuts, pulses, and legumes can help us feel fuller for longer, reducing the need for snacking between meals. Plant proteins also tend to have a lower energy density than their animal counterparts, meaning we can eat more of them without consuming more calories than our bodies need, which helps us stay in an energy balance.

3. Sustainability While a plant-based diet is undeniably more sustainable, the emphasis on certain foods such as avocados or exotic fruits can contribute to environmental concerns due to factors like transportation and resource use. The merits of a plant- based diet outweigh the drawbacks, especially if this pattern of eating is done with a critical eye out for ultra-processed foods masquerading as healthy. Benefits extend beyond personal health, and can also contribute to a more sustainable and compassionate world. Adopting a plant- based diet offers an approach to wellness that resonates with both individual and global well-being. But how far plant-based do you need to go to reap the benefits? We’ll delve into the details of that in Part II. Should we go all plant- based in 2024

Part II by Sophie Pelham-Burn

Eggs: The recommendation for eggs is around 2 small eggs per week. Similar to red meat, that is a much lower suggestion than in most health guidelines. Eggs are little nutritional powerhouses, so any significant reduction in intake needs to be balanced out by including nutrients such as choline, iron, and vitamins A and E elsewhere in the diet. Dairy: The diet suggests no more than 250 grams (8.8 ounces) of dairy per day or two average-sized pots of yoghurt. Legumes: Consume at least 75 grams (2.6 ounces) per day. These include beans, lentils, and peas. We should still be aiming for a protein source with every meal, so if we’re reducing our protein intake by having fewer animal sources, it’s a good idea to make sure you’re consuming enough plant-based proteins. When introducing beans and pulses to the diet it’s a good idea to do it gradually, to avoid any digestive discomfort. Whole Grains : Whole grains like brown rice, whole wheat, and oats should make up a significant portion of daily carbohydrate intake. The authors suggest aiming for about 232 grams (8.2 ounces) of whole grains per day, although that will depend significantly on your own health goals and activity levels. Nuts and Seeds: Incorporating nuts and seeds into your diet is encouraged, providing healthy fats, protein, and micronutrients. The recommended intake is about 50 grams (1.8 ounces) per day. Added Sugars : Minimise the consumption of added sugars, which can be found in sugary drinks, snacks, and processed foods. There's a strong recommendation to keep added sugar intake to a minimal amount; below 31g per day. Oils : Use healthy oils like olive oil and canola oil in moderation for cooking and flavour. The recommended intake is about 31 grams (1.1 ounces) per day.

In part one of this article we looked at what a plant-based diet means, as well as the pros and cons of adopting more of a plant-centric way of eating. But how far plant-based do you need to go to see the benefits? Do you need to go completely vegan? The short answer is no. You can eat in a way that is both healthy and sustainable for the planet whilst still including animal products if you wish. The planetary health diet is a dietary framework designed to promote both human health and environmental sustainability. It was developed by the EAT-Lancet Commission and provides specific recommendations for the intake of main food groups. Red Meat: Red meat, including beef and lamb, has a substantially higher environmental footprint than fish or poultry, and including high levels of red meat in the diet can be detrimental to human health too. Most people eating a traditional Western diet could do with reducing red meat consumption for health reasons, although the recommendations f rom the Planetary Health diet are to include no more than 14g per day or less, which would equate to a medium- sized steak every fortnight . This is significantly lower than recommendations that are based on our health outcomes, which are to limit red meat to no more than 70g per day, or 3 servings per week. Poultry and Fish: For those who choose to consume animal-based protein, the diet recommends around 200g of poultry and fish per week, which would be the equivalent of 2 average chicken breasts per week, and/or 2 large fish fillets. Most health guidelines suggest one of those portions of fish should be oily (salmon, trout, herring, mackerel, sardines) to ensure an adequate intake of Omega 3 fatty acids.

The planetary health diet promotes a flexible approach that can be adapted to cultural and regional preferences. Its primary goal is to provide a balanced, sustainable, and healthy way of eating while addressing the challenges of global food production and environmental conservation. The recommendations outlined above can help people improve their health and contribute to the well- being of the planet by reducing the environmental impact of their diet. Of course, as with any diet, it’s important to introduce any changes gradually, and when reducing our intake of certain foods we still need to make sure we’re getting those nutrients from other sources. Vitamin N

"What? You haven’t heard about vitamin N? Well then let me explain the importance of this vital nutrient known as nature. In my health coaching practice, I have been teaching my clients for decades the importance of communing with nature (Vitamin N) to support optimal health and well-being based on my gut instinct and personal experience. Because I found that spending time with nature is as critical for my physical, mental, and spiritual health as eating a proper diet, regular physical activity, and getting adequate sleep. It has been a pillar for more than thirty years in my management of health, stress, mood, and quality of life. Nobody had to tell me to do it, it just occurred innately. If I wane from this activity, then I suffer great consequences. So, I build it into my life naturally." - Cynthia Perkins M.D. Read Article in Full here

At the University of Michigan, researchers demonstrated that, after just an hour interacting with nature, memory performance and attention spans improved by 20 percent. In workplaces designed with Vitamin N or nature in mind, employees are more productive and take less sick times.

Eventually, it wasn’t even on the list. Although I couldn’t see it at the time, it was a very grave error on my part to neglect the golden ticket that was sobriety. I stopped going to sobriety meetings. AA was not the right fit and in Ireland of old, there were no other options available . I no longer made my daily promise or evening thanks. I wasn’t passing this gift on to others in the grip of addiction, as is the way in sobriety - you pass it on. The truth was I’d forgotten sobriety even was a gift! Life throws curve balls at us all, nobody escapes that reality. I lost loved ones, encountered trauma, grief, and pain in varying degrees, and throw in menopause, some empty nest syndrome and you have some serious issues to deal with. But throughout all of this, I never considered picking up a drink, not once. I was a hormonal mess, and depressed, but drinking wasn’t a thought I’d ever entertained until I did. Enter stage left that bitch, Moderation Marcus, a clever cunning witch, with her subtle whispers spinning in my head. How nice it could be, how inclusive it could feel to have just a couple of glasses of wine. After all, I’d handled every curve ball sober and a few glasses would take me out of the margins back in the fold of socialising. I wouldn’t feel so alone. I’d be fine and I would be the exception to the rule. These thoughts became bigger and bigger. The blunt reality is connection was what I was longing for, not alcohol. My mind was a raging turmoil and I had no sober space to help me unravel it so I caved and I went there . I turned my proudest achievement into my greatest regret. And we all know how the reality plays out - in no time at all alcohol had me bound and shackled again. In my delusional mind, I had reasoned if it didn’t work out, I’d just stop and the addiction brain told me, it would be easy and I could just flip a switch. How wine witch must have laughed and laughed because if she gets hold of you again, she’s holding tighter than ever before. I

There is a place in hell reserved just for me and I don’t have to leave my mortal body to go there; I simply have to pick up a drink and I’ll be there in no time. This I sadly know all too well as I have been down that hole not once, but twice. The first time was not my fault, I became addicted to an addictive substance that is alcohol, and my return journey to hell was all down to me…. Some weeks ago, I hosted my very first Hola Sober support group which is a closed meeting . It is both a gift and a privilege to take a seat in this sacred space and the desire to give the best meeting possible was uppermost in my mind. I was nervous and excited and had a list of ‘what ifs to share with Susan and Alex. Just be yourself and maybe share some of your journey was their advice and as I trust them with my life I did just that. The part of my journey that I chose to share was the piece that caused me the most horrendous guilt and shame, and we call it RELAPSE code word for hell. After sixteen whole years of being on the right side of the glass, I fell and when I fell, I fell hard. Back in 1999, my sobriety was my greatest gift and my proudest achievement and I was hugely grateful. I had finally thrown off the shackles of addiction to the alcohol that had both ruled and ruined my day-to-day life. Now I could finally be the wife, mother, sister, and friend that I was always meant to be. Real, authentic, and present. After the first year of adjustment, attending meetings, aftercare, making my daily morning promise, and grateful evening thanks, I finally found my feet in the sober world. I no more wished to return to drinking alcohol than I would to have my teeth pulled out with pliers and no anesthetic! Life was good, better than good, I saw everything with new bright eyes. My children were the focus of my world and sobriety became my natural way of being. The years passed and it gradually became something that I barely gave a thought to. I’d got this. It had long since stopped being a priority, and as time went on it went further and further down the list of things to take care of and nourish.

THE STORY OF ONE

BY LINDA REDMOND

was trying to squeeze a genie back in a bottle and there I was, powerless yet again sitting in hell. This time it was all my own making. And I couldn’t believe how difficult it was to get out again. I was furious with myself, full of guilt and shame and regret that I’d ever gone there again. But I kept trying. I would have months of not drinking but I’d fall again and I knew I wasn’t sober (after all I knew how that freedom felt). It took me nearly four years to finally find the key . And the key was and always will be a connection. I found online modern recovery through The Luckiest Club sobriety support group and it was there I first met Susan Christina, a fellow Irish woman and the founder and fearless leader of what I call the Platinum sober space that is Hola Sober. Here with Susan and the leaders and all of my other strong, powerful, and brave sober sisters, I have my friends, finally, come home. And here I’ll stay for I have found my tribe and my greatest wish and now gift was to hold out my hand and help other sober sisters along and as a host, Susan has given me the platform to do just that. I have turned my greatest regret into a tool that I can and will use again and again as a truth that is foreboding and real and if it stops just one woman from making the same mistake, I rest easy on my sober pillow. A funny thing happened after I shared this part of my journey in a sober meeting, the shame died, right there and then . And so, I can finally be at peace, I was one of the lucky ones, not everyone makes it back to this sacred space of second chances. The gift of sobriety is one to be cherished and nurtured above all else always and for me, connection always will be the oxygen it needs to not just survive but to thrive. Lots of love Linda xxx
