Hola Sober Morning Reflection

by Susan Christina

"I am not the issue, alcohol is the issue and I drink at every issue…." For many women, I talk to… Overwhelm was the issue. Imposter Syndrome was the issue. Self sabotage was the issue. Insecurity was the issue. The white noise was the issue. Small trauma and big trauma was the issue. Our multiple roles as women was the issue. Invisible unspoken benchmarks for women to reach were the issue. Social conditioning was the issue. Dysfunctional coping mechanisms were the issue. Depression was the issue. Hormones were the issue. Menopause was the issue. Single motherhood was the issue. Divorce was the issue. A sad marriage was the issue. Loneliness was the issue. Not loving yourself was the issue. NOT KNOWING your power was and continues for many, to BE the issue. Alcohol being an addictive substance IS the issue. Disconnection was the result. Over-drinking was the outcome. Daily hitting wine addiction o'clock became the habit… Daily guilt-shame-darkness came home to roost… Breaking dawn with a raft of promises to the universe…… Addiction to wine addiction o'clock was the outcome. "I am not the issue, alcohol was the issue."

“I am not the issue, alcohol was the issue." This realisation is a pivotal moment in the journey of recovery. It's acknowledging that the struggles, regrets, and turmoil were fuelled by a substance that took control. By separating oneself from the clutches of alcohol, you free yourself from the blame and shame. It's not about personal failure; it's about breaking free from a destructive force. This realisation empowers you to reclaim your identity, dreams, and potential that were overshadowed by alcohol. It's a declaration that your worth and potential were never diminished by the substance. As you distance yourself from alcohol, you rediscover your strength and resilience. You become the architect of your destiny, no longer controlled by a substance that masked your true essence. This understanding shifts the narrative from self-criticism to self- compassion. It's a reminder that you were never the issue; the issue was the insidious grasp of alcohol. With this newfound clarity, you can move forward, embracing your journey of healing, growth, and liberation from the chains that once bound you. Remember we say one loud no to alcohol to say a very loud yes to all other things. Today embrace that notion, that YOU were not the issue, ALCOHOL was the issue. Have a great day as you look skyward and say not today lady, not today.
