Jason St. Louis, Independent A former MMA fighter turned paralegal, St. Louis is running on a platform of ‘trans- parency’ and ‘honesty’ in government. St. Louis said running as an independent allows him to tailor his politics to the needs of his constituency. Voters across the province of Ontario are headed to the polls on Feb. 27 after Premier Doug Ford triggered the snap election. Voters can cast their ballot on Feb. 27 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. There are seven candidates running in the provincial riding of Glengarry-Prescott-Russell (population of 116,463, according to the 2021 census), which is currently served by Stephane Sarrazin, a Progressive Conserva- tive (PC) who won the riding in 2022. The riding was held by the Liberal Party between 1999 and 2018 and former MPP Amanda Simard won the riding in 2018 as a PC candidate, before she left caucus. Simard lost the 2022 election as the Liberal
Sarrazin was first elected as MPP for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell in 2022, after previously serving as the mayor of Alfred and Plantagenet and the warden of the United Counties of Prescott and Russell. As of March 28, 2024, Sarrazin became Parliamentary Assistant to the Associate Minister of Small Business and Parliamen- tary Assistant to the Minister of Francophone Affairs. Trevor Stewart, Liberal Party of Ontario Stewart is a first term Clarence-Rockland City Councillor, representing the villages of Hammond and Cheney. Since 2021, he has worked as executive assistant to Francis Drouin, Liberal MP for the federal riding of Glengarry-Prescott-Russell.

Alors que les Ontariens se dirigent vers les urnes le 27 février, soit un an et demi plus tôt que prévu, la chef libé- rale de l’Ontario, Bonnie Crombie, s’est rendue à Rockland la semaine dernière en compagnie du candidat de Glengarry- Prescott-Russell, Trevor Stewart. Crombie s’est arrêtée au G.A.B.’s Restaurant & Bar à Rockland, où, avec M. Stewart à ses côtés, elle a annoncé une série de promesses en cas d’élection de son gouvernement. Il s’agit de la cinquième visite de Crombie dans cette circonscription provinciale au cours de la dernière année et de sa troisième halte à Rockland. « Doug Ford n’est pas venu dans notre région depuis sept ans en tant que premier ministre, » a déclaré Stewart. « Nous avons été ignorés par ce gouvernement et il est temps de changer. Bonnie a montré son engagement envers les résidents et les entreprises de cette circonscription, où elle apprend ce qui impacte le plus les gens. » La chef libérale de l’Ontario a révélé le plan de son parti pour offrir aux Ontariens une réduction d’impôt si les libéraux forment le prochain gouvernement provincial.

When they set about opening their beverage-alcohol business in 2017, the founders of Dunrobin Distilleries set themselves some lofty and highly spirted goals. “Our mantra when we started Dunrobin was to be second to none,” according to co-founder Adrian Spitzer. “We put our heads down and said let’s go head-to-head with whatever are the best whiskies out there.” It was a heady challenge, so to speak: savoured in more than 150 countries around the world, Canadian whisky is an iconic and unique brand among its Scottish, Irish and American brown-spirit brethren. Having been distilled as early as the late-1700s in Quebec, Canadian whisky – often called “rye – established itself as a hyper-local agricultural product long before the many small distilleries making spirits were gobbled up by international monoliths like Beam Suntory, Constellation, Diageo, 1FSOPE3JDBSEBOE6OJUFE%JTUJMMFST The right people and the right ingredients Today, there are over 200 distilleries across the country, including Ontario busi- nesses such as Dunrobin of Vankleek Hill: 4QJU[FSBOEDPGPVOEFS.BSL8BUTPOmIJHI school friends from The Glebe in Ottawa – sought to correct the imbalance of the international distillers and put the hyper-local back into premium Canadian whisky with their brand. The earliest of the distillery’s roots were Watson’s 10-acre hobby farm located in Dunrobin, about 35 kilometres from down- town Ottawa; it operated on the premise that with the right people and the right ingredients it could compete in a highly competitive market. When the quality of those initial ingre- dients they purchased was questionable, they found better sources, according to Spitzer. “We decided to grow ingredients in our organic farm environment and buy from neighbouring farms, so we knew what we were dealing with.” After developing, testing and perfecting recipes, Dunrobin launched a vodka and got it onto the shelves of the LCBO. Since then, they’ve won numerous awards and now sell 21 whiskies, a collection of bitters, some liqueurs and ready-to-drink cocktails such as raspberry-black tea soda and grapefruit and gin. The lineup also includes an admirable Canuck pun: “Beaver’s Dram” are premium whiskies with either a port or a sherry finish, and as well two double-distilled single malt whiskies which are somewhat rare in the Canadian whisky pantheon. Whisky flavours are, in part, derived from their storage in wooden bourbon or sherry casks; Dunrobin has a process that reduces that finishing time from 18 or 24 months to 18 days, according to Spitzer. “It gives us a plethora of opportunities for flavour profiles,” he says. “Canadians love their Caesars’’ The Dunrobin catalogue also includes a 42%-proof potato vodka with juniper, anise and fennel elements – and which reaches

far back into Spitzer’s personal history. i.ZHSBOENPUIFSIBEIFSPXOTUJMMGPS distilling water and many years ago a Polish neighbour showed me how ferments convert to alcohol,” says Spitzer who counts their rye, Earl Grey Gin and The Silver Pickle vodka – “Canadians love their Caesars,” he says – as their flagship brands. A growing international business, Dunro- bin has maintained its community presence and their roots in the Ottawa area: they just finished participating in this year’s Winter- lude and were selling beverages to skaters on the frosty Rideau Canal Skateway from their kiosk. “We were serving hot chocolates and whiskies and rums,” he notes. “We had our TJHOBUVSF/PSUIFSO4QJLFDPDLUBJMXIJDIJT warmed maple sap with tea and rum. It’s a beautiful drink that warms you right up.” Covid pivot with Beau’s Brewing Spitzer describes himself as a “serial entrepreneur” and adds that Dunrobin’s success didn’t rely on borrowing large sums of money from banks; rather, they went the investor route. “We reached out to our network of busi- ness owners and seasoned professionals in the area. We got our initial investment from them as our seed money and angel investors. We established operational pro- duct development and all-Canadian products going into the market.” In the spring of 2020, Dunrobin moved their main production into roughly 2,000 sq.-ft. at Beau’s Brewery (now part of Steam Whistle) in Vankleek Hill; in December 2022, they bought the 35,000 sq.-ft. space and quickly found themselves using 90 per cent of that area for their various products. During Covid-19, they helped Beau’s with thousands of litres of beer – that has a relatively short shelf-life – when the popular brewery had no restaurants to sell to. The ensuing alliance became one of those for- tuitous silver-lining moments in a dark-cloud
era: like hundreds of other businesses, Dunrobin “pivoted.” “We had just received a new still made in Amsterdam. It was state-of-the-art, compu- terized and made of stainless steel instead of copper,” Spitzer says. “Instead of bringing it to Dunrobin, we set up at Beau’s and sucked the alcohol out of the hundreds of litres of beer.” In 2022, Dunrobin also established a strategic partnership with Swiss distiller Seven Seals Innovation AG. A pebble dropped in the water A self-described lover of many varieties of Scotch, whisky and bourbon, Spitzer and the founding members of Dunrobin, impressively, didn’t come out of the beverage-alcohol sector: they essentially pulled themselves up by the distilling bootstraps. “We put our minds to it, took some courses and met with people in the industry. When you get into spirits production, you start off with basic recipes and adjust them to your own liking.” He’s says growth has been like dropping a pebble in the water, perhaps an apt descrip- tion given the vastness of the $130 billion $"/ SFWFOVFHFOFSBUFECZUIFCSPXOTQJSJUT industry across the globe: Dunrobin has seen sales of their products grow from bottles to cases to pallets to shipping containers sent as far away as Singapore and Japan. /PNBUUFSXIFSFZPVESJOLJU UIPVHI Dunrobin spirits focus on taste rather than price and age, according to Spitzer. “Some people like to add some water. LISE MARTEL Madame Lise Martel, de Hawkesbury, est décédée le dimanche 23 février 2025, à l'âge de 88 ans. Elle était la tendre épouse de feu Charles Martel; la fille de feu Arthur Dicaire et de feu Cécile Thériault; la mère bien- aimée de Bernard (Carole), Daniel (Chantale), Francine (Denis), Guy (Marleen) et Claude (Elisa); la grand-mère adorée de 12 petits- enfants; l’arrière-grand-mère de 11 arrière- petits-enfants; et la chère sœur de Carmen (feu Dollard Potvin), Jean-Pierre (Pierette) et Aurèle (Linda). Elle fut prédécédée par sa fille Mireille et son fils Jacques. Lui survivent également plusieurs cousins, cousines, neveux, nièces et amis. La famille tient à remercier la Résidence Champlain pour leur gentillesse et leurs bons soins. La direction des funérailles a été confiée au SALON FUNÉRAIRE FAMILIAL BERTHIAUME, 416, rue McGill, Hawkesbury (Ontario) 877-632-8511. Une célébration de vie aura lieu dans l’intimité de la famille au printemps. It is with great sadness that the family of Anthony “Tony” Randall Chenel, of Hawkesbury, announce his passing peacefully at home, on February 15 th , 2025, at the age of 81. Tony will be sadly missed by his wife Lynne (née Amey) of more than 58 years, his daughter Deborah Lee (Erwin Jackl), his son Andrew Clyde (Elisabeth Arbaud), his grandchildren Cameron Mark George Chenel (Jihye Park) and Anysha Lee Chenel (Eddie Jones) and his half- brother Keith Clements of London, England. Tony also leaves behind a sister-in-law Susan Liberale (née Amey) as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. The family would like to thank the staff of Bayshore Home Care as well as Dr. Rossbach, for the excellent care and attention they gave to Tony. Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, 168 John Street, Hawkesbury, Ontario, on Tuesday, March 4 th , 2025, followed by a service at 11 a.m. Tony was a man of many passions, each one reflecting his love for life. He shared a special bond with his wife, and together, they traveled the world, enjoying countless cruises and scenic train rides to places both near and far. For 19 years, Tony served as a volunteer firefighter for Dollard-des-Ormeaux, a role he was deeply proud of. He thrived on helping others and found immense joy in the camaraderie of his fellow firefighters, always giving his best. Outside of his service, Tony was an avid amateur photographer, capturing the world through his lens with an artist’s eye for detail. Tony will be immensely missed by all who knew him. For those who wish, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated. A Tree of Remembrance in Tony’s honour will be planted in the McAlpine Forever Forest, in Vankleek Hill.
