It took just over a year to build and in the first two years they’ve put on over 6,500 miles. An S10 chassis combined with a Code 504 kit and a 5.3LS and 4L60E transmission, along with a host of everything aftermarket, has them anxious to get back on the road when the snow melts.

Advanced Technology

L iving in Southern California has its ups and downs. What attracts millions are the weather and always breathtaking land- scapes. However, there are many cities with con- gested traffic and we happen to live on the outer edge of the LA metropolis, one of the most con- gested. As regular readers may know my daily driv- er for the past 30 years has been a ’95 Chevy extended-cab pickup with a 4/6-inch drop and steelies with ’41-48 Chevrolet script hubcaps. For over a dozen years I commuted to work in Orange County, earning it a personalized license plate from my good friend Eric Geisert proclaiming it the “MoVal Freight Train.” The ‘slammed effect’ enhances its long silhouette and as the years have unfolded it feels even larger in today’s urban traffic. Even parking lots seem to have narrowed parking allotments to maximize space for today’s ‘jelly beans.’ I’m also intimidated on the freeways snaking my way through traffic at 70-plus only to be passed by minivans packed to the gills as though I were sitting still. Not withstanding the fact this year I’ll be able to drive through the main entrance at all NSRA events (if I don’t forget to reg- ister!), I can’t help but feel like technology has eclipsed the old Freight Train. It’s ready for an update. A recent case of technology racing forward at breakneck speeds was the release of the 2025 C8 Corvette ZR1, the fastest production Corvette ever produced. Powered by the 5.5-liter LT7 flat-plane- crank V-8 with a pair of massive turbochargers, the 8,000rpm redline achieves peak torque of 828lb-ft at 6,000rpm with a maximum horsepower output of 1,064hp at 7,000rpm. The official acceleration figures just released from Chevrolet for the C8 ZR1 are 0-60 in 2.3 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 9.6 seconds at 150 mph when equipped with the “ZTK package.” This package includes the Magnetic Selective Ride Control, but with stiffer springs and special calibration, visually aggressive aerodynam- ics with a high-down-force carbon fiber rear spoiler, front splitter, side skirts and tires to focus on maxi- mum performance on the racetrack. As I read about this amazing car the quarter- mile performance numbers seemed similar to ones we obtained in a streetable ’40 Ford sedan dubbed “Project 40” four decades ago. I decided to com- pare the numbers and sure enough, the ’40 recorded times .25 second quicker (9.35) and 2.9

mph (152.90) faster. To say the ’40 Ford was a streetable car in the same sense as this Corvette is certainly stretching the truth, but to be fair, either one will deliver an exhilarating experience! To achieve its performance required stuffing in 14.5x32 Goodyear slicks, a Strange Engineering strut-style front suspension, a full roll cage and a Yenko aluminum big-block with 12 pounds of boost from a Littlefield 8-71 supercharger pumping out 840hp into the confines of an upholstered ’40 Ford sedan. At this point, any performance com- parisons to the C8 ZR1 go out the window. With four decades of engineering, advancements in manufacturing and materials, and their long legacy of performance research and experience, the designers and engineers working on the 2025 C8 Corvette ZR1 were just warming up! All this tech- nology and effort obviously make this Vette insane- ly quick, but beyond the quarter-mile it keeps on cruising all the way to 233mph. With exotic-car appeal, an interior built to safely handle G-forces along with all the luxuries one could expect, and its performance legacy all coming together only time will tell what the true potential of this Corvette is once it starts getting out in the public’s hands. The truth is the ’40 Ford was pushed near the very limit of what an all-steel vintage car of this era with full upholstery and trim could muster, especially keeping the true street-legal designation. Aerodynamics was not in its favor! As a side note to this quarter-mile comparison it’s interesting to note the cost to build Project ’40 in 1995 was only slightly higher than the $68,300 sticker for the base 2025 C8 Corvette. However, the starting price for a production C8 ZR1 is $174,995. These prices seem extremely reasonable for a car with this amount of pedigree and all it represents. Reasonable yes, unless you are one of the most passionate Corvette collectors in the world. Rick Hendrick recently added to his 120-car Corvette collection at the world re-known Barrett- Jackson auction when he bought the very first 2025 C8 Corvette for $3 million dollars, followed by the first 2025 C8 Z06 for $3.6 million and the first ZR1 for $3.7 million. All the money generated from the sale of the ZR1 was donated to the Red Cross. It’s fun to think about what advanced tech- nology has in store next. Tom Vogele tomvogele@verizon.net

Pizza Anyone? Staff,

Hot Stuff Debra,

My ’30 Ford Tudor received a “Carburetor Court” award at the latest Mid-America Street Rod Nationals and a great shot of it was included in the event coverage. I’m 78 years old and have built cars for 60 years, but this is the first time one of my cars made the magazine! It took me 17 years to build

ture of me accepting the award was at the Street Rod Nationals East in 2024. While attending the Nats East we entered Mustang Corral and were thrilled to win. Having built the car from an empty shell it was a great honor to be picked. I did all of the rebuild save for a friend at Chris’s Auto Body who painted it. Amazingly I won a Super Prize Giveaway in 2023 from Dakota Digital and now those taillights are in my ‘69 Mach 1. Again thank you for everything. Vern Auker Via e-mail Vern, Your Mach’s transformation in less than 10 months is a testament to your skills and passion. Thankful Winner Tom,

I normally don’t write letters, but I need to thank NSRA for making all your great car shows happen. My ‘home’ show is the Street Rod Nationals East and in 2023 I went for my Safety Inspection on my ‘29 coupe when the inspector noticed an odd thing with my steering. Every time the steering wheel was moved, the engine moved! Thanks to the inspector’s extra set of eyes we found a cracked frame so I was able to repair it and feel safe again. In 2024 I finished our new ride, a ‘69 Ford Mach 1. What was left of the car was delivered to my garage on September 30, 2023, and the pic-

Celebration of Life Dave Cahal October 23, 1940 to November 24, 2024

O n January 4, 2025, a Celebration of Life was held at the Lodi Moose Lodge in Acampo, California, for our beloved former NSRA Southwest Division Director, Dave Cahal. In 2024 while attending the Western Street Rod Nationals Dave officially retired his position as Southwest Director after 37 years promoting NSRA through- out Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah.

Dave was an active member of the Over the Hill Gang, Foothill Classic and Cal Vintage Rods and he and Mary held an annual NSRA Appreciation Day for 25 years in Lathrop. Aside from promoting NSRA Membership at all the major indoor/outdoor car shows out west, Dave had both the passion and skill to organize street rod cruises to far away places such as the Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky, Deuce Days in Victoria, British Columbia, and all up and down the West Coast. His cruises were always filled with exciting stops to visit some of the hobby’s best shops, muse- ums and private collections. The

Dave was born in Buffalo, New York, October 23, 1940, but when only an infant the fam- ily moved to Southern California. He enjoyed a long career with United Grocers that in 1987 found himself and his wife Mary living in Valley Springs, California. In the mid-‘80s Dave joined the NSRA and soon became the Northern California State Representative and for the past 25 years served as the Southwest Division Director.

family received this testimony from Sue Hendricks, one of Dave’s fellow cruisers; “To the Cahal family I want to say you did your dad proud. It was a very nice Celebration of Life and I know he would love the mag- net/dash plaque all us cruisers had made. I’m sure many of his buddies will have them dis- played in or on their car so he can keep going on road trips with us. B uild and modify your 1967-1972 Chevrolet or GMC truck utilizing today’s greatest parts. The ‘67-72 GM pickups are American icons. They’ve been popular for decades due to their sim- ple nature, stout engine options, crisp styling, and fantastic reliability. However, you can make a classic pick- up drive, stop, and look bet- ter than it ever did from the factory. Longtime magazine editor Jim Pickering dives into all the factors that made these GM trucks so popular as well as the modifications that bring a modern spin to their clas- sic look and feel. He takes a close look at all the major sys- tems in your truck and covers the ways to upgrade those systems. These upgrades make your truck quick, safe, stylish, and reliable enough to drive across the coun- try or over to your local cruise- night diner. The market has caught on to these trucks (with high prices to match), but you don’t have to break the bank to find a good one if you know where to look and what to look for. This book covers a lot of ground—from sourcing a great starting point to the inevitable rust repair that you’ll have to tackle before the real fun begins. From there, the book cov- ers powertrain options, including LS and LT swaps, overdrive auto- matic and manual transmission installation, hydraulic clutch con- versions, and 12-bolt axle rebuilds. Also covered are coilover and airbag suspension installation,

exhaust systems, big brakes, tight steering, making all new steel high-pressure fuel lines, aftermar- ket wheels and tires, and more. Aesthetic upgrades include con- verting from a long bed to a short bed, patina paint application, cooling-system upgrades, interior rehabilitation, light-emitting diode (LED) lighting, and air-conditioner installation. “Chevy/GMC Trucks 1967-1972: How to Build and Modify” is a valuable resource whether you do the work yourself or you want expert advice regard- ing items to upgrade before hiring a professional. The 8 1/2 x 11- inch, 192-page soft bound book features 485 color photos. Title: Chevy/GMC Trucks 1967- 1972 Available From: CarTech 800-551- 4754 or cartechbooks.com Price Range: $37. 00 plus S&H

PIN-UP GIRL CONTEST

There will be two brand new stops on this year’s Shop Cruise at the Mid-America Nationals. First up will be “VL Classics” in Strafford and last year’s Spotlight Builder Jamie Johnson’s Rust2Rodz will both be open- ing their facilities for all to enjoy. Just like last year, staging will take place at Top Golf, which is kiddy corner from The DoubleTree Hotel. Once again, Bret Chrismer has also offered to lead the caravan to both shops. The exact time of when the cruise will be leaving is yet to be determined but will be noted in the Official Event Guide. P eople have been declaring this or that car is des- tined to become the next ’32 Ford roadster for years now. Today we have available steel repro- duction Tri-Five Chevys, first-generation Camaros, ‘65 Ford Mustangs and a host of other makes/models and they all make a great starting point for builds just like the thousands of steel Brookville Roadster bodies did for those wanting a ’32 Ford. None of these new reproduction bodies have knocked the ’32 off its throne yet, but today it seems the C10 Chevy pickup is winning the popularity contest (really C/10/20/30 plus GMC’s offerings.) Usually it’s the square-body pickup everybody waxes on about (‘73-91) and ultimately, the square-body will probably come out on top because of

the overwhelming numbers produced. Jerone Coca from Pueblo, Colorado, and I are huge fans of the second-generation C10 pickups (‘67-72) which General Motors dubbed the “Action Line” pickups, mostly a cosmetic redo of the first-gener- ation C10 (‘60-66.) Jerone has always loved and want- ed a ’72 and it’s easy to see why. The ’71-72 model years’ waffle grille really looks better than earlier and later C10 grilles (and it’s the most copied grille in the whole line with that waffle style available aftermarket for almost all Chevy/Ford/Dodge pickups.) The whole plan with the Action Line of pickups was to build haulers for the masses with more creature comforts for rising numbers of people driving pickups daily.

28 MARCH 2025

Feature design by Paul Sloup Article & photography by Louie Mayall

Jerone picked up his ’72 C10 from a close friend and since he knew he was going to cruise the doors off it, sent the hauler over to Herrera Custom Classics for a perfected chassis and powertrain. The basic chassis was C-notched and stiffened before adding the front suspension featuring CPP tubular con- trol arms, RideTech bags/shocks, factory steering and big Wilwood brakes. The stockish rear suspension sits on a full RideTech kit that hangs a 4.10-geared 10-bolt with bags on the trailing arms. Jerone had Herrera’s slip in a ‘built’ ’70 Chevy 350 with aluminum heads, a Lunati cam, an Edelbrock Air Gap intake with a Demon

carb, and a Flowmaster exhaust with side exits. A Turbo 400 then sends the power down towards the 22-inch US Mags wearing Nitto rubber (295/30/22). Jerone didn’t want to mess with the good looks he adored, but he did clean things up and make it all just a little better. All the trim was removed, the side maker lights were retained and converted to LED units, it was nosed and decked, the taillights were replaced with LEDs and molded in, LED headlights were switched in, the front and rear bumpers were replaced with smoothie units, and one-piece side glass and a flush-mounted windshield installed. Charlie Vigil then straightened everything out and laid down the Fireball Red metallic paint. A Mar-K wood bed kit was

custom tinted to match the Fireball paint and installed. Jerone and Herrera’s filled the interior with Intellitronix gauges, Kenwood tunes, Kicker speakers in the door panels, Vintage Air climate control, a billet steering wheel, a Hurst Comp shifter and Painless Wiring. Professional Interior stitched the black leather around ’68 Buick seats for comfy cruising. There is nothing super fancy about Jerone’s ’72 C10, but it all just works together and looks and runs great. He took the time to choose every mod and part to build his dream and it all came together with help from Herrera Custom Classics. I fell in love at first sight, but what counts is that Jerone is having a great time cruising his dream ride!

ARP Salutes The Craftsmen Whose Creations Earn Major Industry Awards Artistry In Metal

Alan Johnson was recognized by the NSRA as its 2024 “Individual of the Year.” And for good reason, as the creations turned out by Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop have earned major plaudits…the latest being the “Grease Monkey Princess” 1932 Ford of McKenzie Murphy —an AMBR Contender— that also graced ARP’s display at the SEMA Show. An important part of the SEMA Show was the annual “Battle of the Builders,” which was won by Noah Alexander and the team at Classic Car Studio for the stunning 1968

Dodge Charger built for Ed Ganzinotti. Both builds feature an array of ARP fasteners, with ARP’s polished stainless steel bolts works of art in their own right. They’re also 20% stronger than Grade 8 hardware —as are the companion black oxide finished 8740 chrome moly bolts. ARP manufactures over 5,500 fastener kits totally in-house at its California facilities. Check them out online (www.ARP-bolts.com)
