ing,” “shows,” “gambling,” “lying,” “steal ing.” Yes, any o f these sinful things if al lowed in the Christian’s life will cause his light to grow dim, making others stumble.

Lesson T ext: Acts 19:8-12, 18-20; Eph. 6:13-20. Golden T ext: “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might” (Eph. 6:10). Outline and Exposition I. T he W arfare A gainst S uperstition (Acts 19:8-12, 18-20) I n the synagogue at Ephesus, Paul “ spake boldly for the space of three months” (v. 8), “ disputing [or, “reason ing” ] and persuading” the people from the Scriptures, meaning, the Old Testa ment. Paul’s^ teaching soon awakened enmity and opposition in the hearts of the superstitious folk who gathered there (v. 9). The word “hardened” has two mean ings : First, “to be dry or parched” because of a lack of something, like a desert wait ing for the water which can turn its sand into productive soil; and second, “to render stubborn,” meaning in this instance, like water poured on parched ground only to turn the sand into cakes o f hard and unyielding blocks^ The words of Paul resulted in further unbelief ( “disobedi ence,” R. V .), and, willfully preferring to be unpersuaded, the people began to speak evil of the truth. Then Paul withdrew from them (v. 9). It was a solemn action when Paul with drew, because with his going went jithe opportunity to hear and respond to his God and His gospel. Paul not only withdrew but also took the disciples to the school of Tyrannus where he further taught them. Paul’s withdrawal meant the fur therance of the truth (v. 10), so that “all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord.” The truth of Paul’s preaching was fully attested by the miracles which God wrought through him (vs. 11, 12), special signs and powers granted for that par-i ticular time and place. Such was the power imparted that handkerchiefs which touched the apostle were endued with special heal ing qualities for sickness and demon pos session. There was no doubt but that the message which was preached was from God, but the hardened hearts were too stubborn to believe. But victory in the opposition was mani fest publicly (vs. 18-20), however, for many who did believe became convinced of the sinfulness o f their magical prac tices and brought their books and im plements o f soothsaying for public burn ing. This was done at no small sacrifice, for, in value, about fifty thousand pieces of silver were involved. The result was evidenced by prosperity o f the W o rd : “ So mightily grew the word of God and pre vailed” (v. 20). II. T he W arfare A gainst S atan (Eph. 6:13-20) The armor used in the warfare o f Chris tian life covers every need for protection (vs. 13-17). Because the warfare is a spiritual one, the armor o f protection is

spiritual. The loins are to be girded with truth (cf. John 14:6; 18:37; 1:14). All truth springs from our Lord even as light emanates from the sun; He is the begin ning and end, the center and circumfer ence, the sum and substance o f all truth. The breastplate is a covering for the heart, hindering the entrance o f all self-right eousness (cf. Jer. 23:6; 1 Cor. 1:30; 2 Cor. 5:21). The gospel of peace is to be placed on the feet as shoes (cf. Eph. 2 :14; Col. 1 :20; Rom. 5 :1). The standing equip ment is most important for the Christian warrior, for he frequently stands in slip pery places exposed to the snares and wiles o f the enemy. The shield of faith is the most movable piece of the armor and may be turned in any direction to ward off any threatened onslaught o f doubt or un belief (cf. Gen. 15:1; Psa. 3 :3 ; 84:11; John 6:47; Heb. 11:6). It protects both person and armor, and quenches “the fiery darts” of the devil. The helmet, salva tion; is that which was worn by our Saviour (cf. Isa. 59:17). To each warrior who stands with Him is this head-piece given to protect him from rationalism and the temptation to walk by sight rather than by faith. This word “armor” means “panoply.” Satan’s panoply for the sinner is deception and uncertainty, based on un belief ; God’s panoply is truth and assur ance, based on simple faith. For the pro tection against the world, see Romans 13:12; for protection against the flesh, see 2 Corinthians 6 :7. For protection against the devil we need the ‘‘whole armor of God.” The weapons in the spiritual warfare are two (vs. 17, 18) : First, “the sword of the »Spirit, which is the word of God,” and second, the prayer in the Spirit, which is to be offered according to the will of God in order to accomplish the purposes of God. These two weapons will do dam age to the enemy, to Satan and his hosts. There is a grave danger that the Christian soldier will be so occupied with the defen sive armor that he will neglect to take hold o f these offensive weapons. We, as Christian warriors, need to be aggressive in the warfare and hence must become familiar with the use of those weapons, as well as to wear the protective armor. In this materialistic age in which we are living, we are continually being tempted to believe that there is no spiritual war fare in progress, and that in relying upon material things, such as numbers, physical equipment, wealth, learning, and the like, BLACKBOARD LESSON Ifit Llfie/o TIAN u PLACE OF V IC T O R Y .W ORD O F GOD — H E B . 4 :1 2 V A L U A T IO N - CO M PLETEN ESS IN C H R IS T — .
