countenance anything that would obscure that radiance? “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strange ly dim, In the light of His glory and grace.” What we do hear? If we are to garrison our hearts, we must not only heed how we hear, but also, what we hear. The things we hear, if assimilated, become an. integral part of our being. When we may choose what we shall hear, let us individually ask this question: “Will my fellowship with Christ be enriched by this association?” If our lives are filled with the love of the Lord Jesus, we will want to obey the com mand : “ Come out“from among them and be ye separate” (2 Cor. 6:17). There are things we will not want to see, nor hear, and places we will not want to go, if we value the safe-keeping of our hearts. The “movie” is a place in which that safety of the heart is jeopardized. Our topic is “Morals in the Movies,” and there is much that could be said upon that subject. However, I would humbly suggest that in place o f discussing how we might better the “movies,” we, as followers of Jesus Christ, should consider seriously the subject, “ The Menace of the Movies.” Can you imagine His eyes beholding with pleas ure the sensuality paraded on modern films? Could you think o f Him, gaze at Him, listen to His words, and follow Him while witnessing the average “movie” ? The “movies,” as such, are the greatest single hindrance to church attendance. They draw our young people away, and in some cases even lead into vice and crime. Shall we support by our money, and condone by our presence, this enemy of our Lord? “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (1 John 2:15). Surely the “movies” must be classed as “worldly,” that is, , “of the world.” They certainly are not spiritual. May I urge every “Endeavorer” who honestly wants to do whatever Jesus would have him do, to face this question squarely in the light of these threq texts: 2 Cor. 5:17; 1 John 2:15, and Eph. 4:30? The wonderful invention o f the motion picture machine has been perverted and debased, until association with the industry has become distasteful to consecrated Christians'. James M. Gray of sainted memory said that he had come to the con clusion, after much consideration, that no Christian had any business on either side of the footlights. May God’s own Holy Spirit direct each of you into the real love of God and the consuming desire to do His will. The “movies” demand seeing, hearing, going; are these sights, sounds, and steps for you, O follower of the Lamb? W e are told that there are some very wonderful pictures—very instructive and cultural. This may be true. Egypt was the seat o f culture and learning, but God called His people out from a place where there could be found not only culture, but also “the pleasures of sin.” He is still call ing His people out, and He has promised to be “wisdom” to all that believe. Helps for the Leader I. P leasures in C hrist Mark the joy of a Christ-centered young person, who finds his delight in the pres ence of the Lord, and in fellowship with His people. When General Grant visited England, the Duke of Cambridge offered him a review in his honor, but he declined the courtesy. He declared to his friends that the last thing he desired to see was a mili tary display. He had seen soldiers enough, he said, to last him a lifetime.— S elected . III. P erm anent P eace There is only one peace that will last. It is the peace of God as it shall be estab lished on the earth by Jesus Christ, His Son. “Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: . . . and his name shall be called . . . The Prince of Peace . . . O f the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end” (Isa. 9:6, 7). The prince o f war will be mastered by the Prince of Peace! War will cease when Christ comes; until then there will be, as He has expressed it, “Wars and rumors of wars.” But when He comes, He will, as human agencies cannot, settle all dis puted questions and prevent all interna tional conflicts. “He will judge between the nations, and will decide concerning many peoples” (Isa. 2:4, R. V .). — C hristabel P a n k h u r st . “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Prov. 4:23). It is vital for a man to safeguard his inner life, for “As he thinketh in his heart, so is he” (Prov. 23:7). The heart can be purged only by the blood o f Jesus Christ who said: “ Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God” (Matt. S:8). O f course we know that we cannot of ourselves “keep” our hearts, but “trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ for strength,” we “can do all things through Christ” who strengthens us. I f the heart is to be kept pure and unspotted, we must be careful of what enters it through the eye-gate and the ear-gate, for they often indelibly re cord sensory impressions. What do we see? Do you recall the story o f “The Great Stone Face” ? It remarkably illustrates the principle that we become like that upon which we gaze. This law of life is signally operative in spiritual realities. Do you want to be like Jesus Christ? Here is the method: “We all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord” (2 Cor. 3 :18) . “They looked unto him, and were radiant,” the Psalmist said in Psalm 34:5 (R. V .). Would you, as a reflector of Christ’s glory, NOVEMBER IS, 1936 MORALS IN THE MOVIES P roverbs 4:23; 10:27 Meditation on the Lesson
