An expert on tippling has some tips for the people who make whiskey. They m ight, he says, transpose the atoms th a t make up the alcohol mole cule. Then a m an could take a drink, or any number of them, and be sure to drive home safely. And there would be no hangover. Dr. A lbert J. Russo, medical director of W hite Cross Hospital for Alcoholics at Salem, V irginia, advanced the pro posal recently a t the M ichigan Aca demy of General Practice. A good idea bu t not likely to be adopted by distillers. The University of California w ill undertake a five-year study to deter mine the present status and extent of anti-Semitism in this country. The announcement of the plan was made recently by Dr. Glenn T. Seaborg, Chancellor of the university at Berke ley, and Henry E. Schultz, national chairman of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith. The study w ill be made under the auspices of the un i versity by its Survey Research Center. Dr. Charles Y. Church Split by "Wooden Curtain" In the ill-fated village of Gross- Gleinicke, about twenty miles from Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, a divided flock hears the same sermon. It is preached by W ilhelm Stintzing, a 44- year-old evangelical pastor who has the dubious fame of manifesting the tragedy of Germany’s political split. Every Sunday, Pastor Stintzing travels twenty-five miles to carry out clerical duties to parishioners who are actu ally just yards apart. This situation is forced upon him by a bru tal wooden fence th a t marks West from East Ger m any in w hat was once an idyllic week-end resort of Berliners. Before the war, Pastor Stintzing needed about twenty-five m inutes to go from one end of the village to the other on foot. Today, it takes him three times as long on bicycle. For a t Gross-Gleinicke, there is no opening in the “Wooden Curtain,” and the nearest border cross ing point is twelve miles away, at Staaken. So the pastor has to cycle nearly twenty-five miles twice a week Study to be Made On Anti-Semitism
Ruin of Old City Found in Bahrein
JUNE 13 TO AUGUST 18 ATTEND 2 , 4 , 6 , 8 OR 10 W EEKS
A Danish archaeological expedition has found traces of a distinct civiliza tion th a t flourished 4,000 to 5,000 years ago on the Bahrein Islands in the Persian Gulf. Members of the expedition from the Prehistoric Muse um in Aarhus, Denmark, believe it highly likely th a t this was the site of an ancient city-state called Dilmun. According to one interpretation of early legends, D ilmun was the home of Noah. In six years of exploration the expedition has found the remains of three temples much like the zig- gurats, or conical towers, bu ilt by the Babylonians, and pottery and seals from a time before the temples were built. They believe th a t the distinc tive pottery, w ith red ridges running around the bodies of the pots and the circular shape of the seals indicate th a t Bahrein had a separate civiliza tion of its own, independent of con temporary cultures in w hat is now Iraq and p a rt of present-day Pakistan. The archaeologists reckon th a t about 3,000 years before the time of Christ the fishermen and pearl divers of Bahrein began to engage in maritime trade w ith the rich city states of Mesopotamia and the Indus River. About 2,000 B.C. they were conquered by the Akkadians of Mesopotamia, which would account for the simi larity of the temples. Church Schools Backed Assertions th a t church colleges are fading out of the American scene were sharply contradicted in A tlantic City, New Jersey, recently by a nu- ,clear physicist who had been named to head such a school. Dr. E rling N. Jensen of Ames, Iowa, president-elect' of Muhlenberg College a t Allentown, Pa., asserted th a t church colleges were of the utmost importance today be cause “our times cry out for m en and women who have been educated in the framework of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” “The tensions and trials of a world in a ‘continual state of cold w ar’,” he said, “emphasize the fact th a t the Church, more th an ever, needs to be in the field of higher edu cation.”
