AS TOLD TO MARTHA HOOKER

i|¡¡¡ M r . P. w as at his desk in his study early one Thursday morning when the door opened and in walked his twelve-year-old son Bill. "‘Hello, Son, what can I do for you?” he asked, as he looked up from his work. Surely Bill was facing some important prob lem or he would not take time off on his way to school. “Dad,” Bill went righ t to the point, “May I have some money to buy a new pair of shoes to wear to Sunday school next Sunday? I ju st can’t go if 1 have to wear these,” and Bill dis played two very “holey” soles. A troubled look came over his fa ther’s face. “ I wish I could do it, Son, but 1 have only two dollars in my pocket and you knoW it has to be used to buy food for the seven of us.” But Bill would not be put off. “Dad,” he persisted, “Couldn’t we pray about it?” “Of course, my boy; forgive me for forgetting.” The two bowed their heads, while young Bill poured out his heart to God, the Heav enly Father, asking definitely for a pair of shoes for the next Sunday. Then w ith a hurried, boyish kiss, he dashed away to school, w ith a light heart, leaving his problem in the hands of the Lord. That afternoon, Bill hurried home from school, asking expectantly as he entered the house, “Mom, was there any m ail?” Though the answer wak “No,” Bill’s faith was unshaken. Were there not two mails tomorrow, and one on the next day, before Sunday? But on Friday, the answer was still, “No mail,” to his eager question. “Maybe the Lord wants me to wear these shoes again next Sunday,” Bill said thoughtfully at the close of the day,” “and if He does, I ’ll be w illing to do it.” On Saturday there was only one de livery of mail in the morning. Never had Bill waited for the postman w ith such interest. He reasoned th a t if it seemed best to the Lord, his prayer would be answered; God was certain ly able to do anything.

At last the mail came, and yes, there was a letter addressed to Mr. P.! W ith a trembling hand, Bill carried it to his father. Mr. P. opened it quickly, and sure enough, out fell a check for six dollars! Bill shouted joyfully, “Oh, Dad, I knew He would do it!” Mr. P. read aloud the letter which accompanied the check. It had been sent by the secretary of a missionary society from a church some distance away, a church in which Mr. P. had never preached or even visited. The letter stated th a t on Thursday morn- SOME BIBLE VERSES FOR OUR MOTHERS M-y grace is sufficient for thee. II Cor. 12:9 O- taste and see that the Lord is good. Ps. 34:8 T-rust in the Lord. Ps. 37:3 H-e leadeth me beside the still waters. Ps. 23:2 E-nter into His gates with thanks giving. Ps. 100:4 R-est in the Lord. Ps. 37:7 ing when the missionary society was in session, the Lord had laid it upon the hearts of the members to send six dollars to Mr. P. “And please,” the letter concluded, “let us know if th is amount met a real need.” Of course, a happy, grateful letter was mailed at once to the missionary society of faithful women whose ears had been tuned to hear the voice of the Heavenly Father. The story of Bill’s need and his prayer for shoes was told. By checking on the time, it was learned that the very day that Bill prayed, God spoke to the members of the missionary society to answer his prayer. Needless to say, the shoes were pur chased and Bill wore them to Sunday school. But, best of all, Bill’s heart was full of praise and thanksgiving to his loving Heavenly Father who had heard and answered his prayer. He was a boy w ith a thankful heart be cause he had learned to know God a little better and to love Him more.
