We get you moving!

Here We Grow Again!

Here we grow again. So many happenings here at Pittman PT. Over the next few months, there will be a lot of activity in the Collierville parking lot. I am not talking about the new parking lot or the painting of the buildings, although that has made a huge difference to my attitude when coming to the office. We will be moving… again. If you have been in the office lately, you know that it has become a little crowded. We have lots of new faces in the front and the back of the house. But better yet, we are able to serve a lot more people and help keep our community living their best life! We aren’t going to move very far, though. We are going to stay in the same center.

Pittman PT will just have a little larger footprint. We will be able to help more people and have areas for specific types of treatment. One thing that I am super excited about is our athletic area. To be able to take someone from injury back to the field has always been a passion. We will be even better equipped to do this in the new space. And, we are going to have an actual break room area. A place to have meetings. A place to have family meals and get to know each other even better. See Grow inside

How to Identify and Treat Knee Arthritis

What Type of Arthritis Affects the Knee Joint? Arthritis refers to any chronic condition that affects the cartilage of the joints. The main signs and symptoms include pain, inflammation, loss of motion, and impaired function. The Arthritis Foundation states that over 100 different types of arthritis exist. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis found in the knee. This type of arthritis leads to a gradual breakdown of cartilage in the joints. This can occur from age, injury, or repetitive use of the affected joint(s). When worn down, cartilage can no longer act as a cushion and shock absorber for the joints, resulting in bone-on-bone friction and painful inflammation. Although aging is one of the most significant risk factors for osteoarthritis, obesity is also a significant contributor to developing osteoarthritis. Obese patients carry extra weight that increases

the pressure through the joint and adds to cartilage breakdown. Recent research suggests that unhealthy diets (i.e., processed foods, high sugar content, etc.) are associated with increased inflammation throughout the body. This inflammation increases the likelihood of experiencing knee pain than patients with healthy weight and diets and similar cartilage damage. There are also physical risk factors associated with increased knee osteoarthritis, including: • Injury to the joint • Participation in certain occupational activities (i.e., repetitive movements like bending or prolonged positions like sitting/driving) • Participation in sports (i.e., contact sports) • Thigh flexor muscle weakness and knee osteoarthritis Common Symptoms of Knee Arthritis It can sometimes be challenging to determine if you are genuinely experiencing arthritic symptoms or if you simply have a joint that is irritated from prolonged positions or from being overworked. The most common signs and symptoms of knee arthritis include: • Pain in the affected joint, which may spread to surrounding soft tissue • Stiffness that leads to loss of motion • Inflammation including warmth/heat around the joint • Joint creaking and pain with movement (especially when weight bearing) • Abnormalities in gait (such as limping) • Weakness of the muscles surrounding the joint If you have been suffering and looking for relief, do not hesitate to contact us today before your condition worsens. How Physical Therapy Can Help Arthritis Regardless of the cause of arthritis, physical therapy plays a significant role in treating its symptoms. Physical therapy should always be the first treatment method before resorting to more aggressive procedures, such as surgery.

Grow continued from cover I cannot wait to have the open house. But I am getting way ahead of myself. We just got the construction bids back. If anyone knows someone in codes and inspections for the town, we could use a push. That process always slows us down. We also just revamped our website. Go check it out. It should have all of the new faces on it by now: www.pittmanpt.com OK. Family Report Sophie’s apartment is great. She is on the Upper West Side and has three great roommates. She has her own room this year and it is bigger than her entire apartment from last year. She has started rehearsals for year two with the Knicks. I am excited to see more basketball at Madison Square Garden. Stone just started his third semester at Culinary School. He is in a house on campus this year but that was an interesting story. He was placed in a hotel at first. Then, he was placed in a 3-bedroom dorm on a neighboring junior college campus. We were starting to search for apartments at that point. Then, just before we signed a lease, he was moved to the house back on campus. What a relief that was. Moved in and started classes. Foster is playing football right now. Grades are great. That dude is ripped too. And eats SO MUCH. They (Foster and Brinkley) are getting ready for Homecoming. How many dresses do you have to try on before you pick one? Apparently, a lot!! Dance has started back already. We are still working on that pesky knee issue with her. She has grown about 4 inches as well. She is taller than Sophie now. Can you believe that she is already 15? It is insane. Someone had the nerve to tell me that I was three years away from being an empty nester. I didn’t like that very much, but the truth does hurt. I drive through the parking lot every once in a while and check the progress of the new space. It is the old Sears space. Hopefully construction will be started by the time this is in your hand.
