1959 Brain-Teasers T h e r e isn’t a saying below that wasn’t made by some Bible hero at a time of mortal danger. Sometimes these heroes were facing battlefield foes. At other times, they were con fronting deadly assassins or cruel and ruthless tyrants. Can you name the speaker in each case? Count 10 for every answer you get right. You can rate your standing as a “ BB” (Bible Brain) as follows: 60, low and lacking; 70, fair and middling; 80, up and coming; 90, bright and bulging. The answers will be found on page 49. 1. “ Arise; for the Lord hath delivered into your hand the host of Mid- ian.” SPEAKER........................ 2. “ If I be an offender, or have com mitted any thing worthy of death, I refuse not to die: but if there be none of these things whereof these accuse me, no man may deliver me unto them. I appeal unto Caesar.” SPEAKER........................ 3. “ Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you today: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.” SPEAKER....................... 4. “We are not careful to answer thee in this matter. Be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.” SPEAKER....................... 5. “We ought to obey God rather than men.” SPEAKER........................ 6. “ I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?” SPEAKER........................ 7. “ O Lord God, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.” SPEAKER........................ 8. “ Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield; but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.” SPEAKER........................

SUGGESTION FOR SPECIAL NEW YEAR'S YOUNG PEOPLE'S SERVICE New Things

those who have accepted Him as Saviour — and best of all — to see Him face to face and to behold His glory (See John 17:24). NEW AND LIVING WAYS When our Lord Jesus Christ died upon the Cross, “ the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom,” thus signifying that a “ NEW and living way” (Heb. 10:19,20), was opened for all be lievers to enter boldly into the very pres ence of God. What a wonderful privilege this is! NEW TOMB At the time of our Lord’s death upon the Cross, Joseph of Arimathaea came to Pilate and secured permission to care for His precious body. “He wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his own NEW tomb hewn out of the rock.” (Matt. 27:59, 60). Here he lay until the third day when He arose majestically and triumphantly from the grave. “ Death could not hold Him prey.” MORE NEW THINGS There are still more NEW things men tioned in God’s Word — “mercies, “ NEW every morning (Lam. 3:23); the NEW wine and NEW garment, described in Luke 5:36; and the NEW commandment of love (John 13:34) in which we are commanded to “ love one another” as He has loved us. What a number of NEW things we have found in God’s Word! Let us begin the NEW Year by thanking our Heavenly Father for all of these wonderful NEW things which pertain or belong to all who have accepted the Lord Jesus as Saviour. This Month's Acrostic J esus saith . . . I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. — John 14:6 A 11 we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. ''ft- Isaiah 53:6 N ow unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you fault less before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy. — Jude 24 U nto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be dis obedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the comer. I Peter 2:7 A sk, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. — Matthew 7:7 R emember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them. — Ecclesiastes 12:1 Y e are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. — John 15:14

S in c e January is the first month of the New Year we would do well to con sider some of the NEW things mentioned

in the Word of God. NEW CREATION

W e will first turn to II Corinthians S: 17. From this verse we learn that all who are “ in Christ,” that is have experienced the NEW birth, become NEW creatures. The old things in their lives, all that pertains to the old sinful life, should be in the past for “ behold all things have become NEW.” NEW HEART In Ezekiel 36:26 we read of a NEW heart which only the Lord can give, not only to Israel but also to all who believe in Him as Saviour. He delights to change the hard, stony heart into a heart of love. NEW NAME Isaiah 62:21 speaks of a NEW name. No more should the mention of a Chris tian’s name recall the things of the old life but rather of the new life in Christ Jesus. (See also Rev. 3:12). NEW MAN In both Ephesians 4:24 and Colossians 3:10, the Christian is exhorted to put off the old man with his deeds (note the list), and put on the NEW man with the lovely array of Christian grace or garments to be exhibited to the world. (Note this list also). NEW SONG Several times the NEW song is men tioned. This is the new song of the re deemed. Psalms 40:3 speaks of the NEW song which He hath put in our hearts, a song of praise unto Him who has lifted us up from the “miry clay” and placed our feet upon the Rock, Christ Jesus. What a safe and secure place! (See also Psalm 98:1). And not only do we sing the NEW song here and now but we look forward to that glad day when gathered about the Throne with the hosts of the redeemed we shall sing the NEW song of Revelation 5:9, “ Thou art worthy . . . for Thou wast slain and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood.” NEW HEAVEN AND NEW EARTH Not only is the NEW song mentioned in the hook of Revelation but many other precious things; in fact this book abounds in NEW things. The consummation of God’s wondrous plans and purposes have come to pass and from His throne, He says, “ Behold I make all things NEW (Rev. 21:5). It is in this book that we are allowed to glimpse the “ NEW heaven and the NEW earth” (Rev. 21:1) and to behold with John “ the holy city, the NEW Jerusalem coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her hus band” (Revelation 21:2). In the last two chapters of this book we glimpse the NEW home, our heavenly home (See Revelation 21 and 22), and we long to enter in. What glories await all
