TIMELINE: ROLL CALL OF CHAPTERS IN THE CONTEXT OF THE STRUGGLE FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE AND RACIAL EQUITY

Mary McLeod Bethune

Last month I stated my preference for certain churches in this city because of the absence of seg- regation or prejudice. My faith in these has been decidedly bolstered since last Sunday, (Nov. 17). At the Community Church, Dr. John Haynes Holmes practically gave over his pulpit to Mary McLeod Bethune who was the guest speaker of the morn- ing. It was truly [a] race relations program and Mrs. Bethune did justice to the occasion. In introducing the speaker who occupied the pulpit with him, Dr. Holmes presented her as one of the foremost wom- en of America, and before taking his seat laid down and elaborated upon four fundamental propositions necessary in the discussion of the race problem: 1. There is no such thing as a pure race. 2. There is no such thing as a superior race. 3. There can be no natural race grouping or segre- gation. 4. There is no such thing as an instinct of race prejudice. ...[I]t was a treat to hear a white minister in these United States accept and elaborate upon such a doctrine. Mrs. Bethune's talk was advertised in the white dailies both before and after the event, just like all other affairs going on at the Community Church.”
