Alumni Chapters of Kap- pa Alpha Psi are chartered in the cities of Pasadena (CA), Alexandria (LA) and Opelousas (LA). — President John F. Ken- nedy issues Executive Order 10925, establishing the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. —
In March, San Antonio becomes first city to inte- grate lunch counters. Florida Governor LeRoy Collins calls lunch coun- ter segregation "unfair and morally wrong” becoming the first governor in the South to speak out against segregation. In April, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) is formed. — On May 6 th , The Civil Rights Act is signed by President Eisenhower. — In October, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and 50 others are arrested at sit-in at Atlanta's Rich's Department Store. In November, John F. Kennedy defeats Richard Nixon in the 1960 presi- dential election. — Later, Ruby Bridges becomes the first Black to attend an all-White elementary school in the South following court-or- dered integration in New Orleans, Louisiana. — In Boynton v. Virginia , the U.S. Supreme Court holds that segregation in bus terminals is illegal because such segregation violates the Interstate Commerce Act. This rul- ing, in combination with the ICC's 1955 decision in Keys v. Carolina Coach , effectively outlaws segre- gation on interstate buses and terminals.
∆Ψ ∆Χ The Winston-Salem State University Chapter, the Delta Chi of Kappa Alpha Psi is chartered. — The Edward Waters Col- lege Chapter, the Delta Psi of Kappa Alpha Psi is chartered. — Alumni Chapters of Kap- pa Alpha Psi are chartered in the cities of Huntsville (AL), Harrisburg (PA), and Hattiesburg (MS). — Sit ins across the south begin in earnest in Greensboro, Nashville and Richmond. — Later, Texas Southern University students hold sit-ins. Felton Turner of Houston is beaten and hanged upside-down in a tree, initials KKK carved on his chest. — Motown Records is founded. — Several schools are deseg- regated across the U.S. — Mack Charles Parker is lynched three days before his trial in Pearl River County, Mississippi. His murderers were never indicted, despite confessions. 1960

Freedom Riders are attacked throughout
Alabama. Those arrested in Jackson, MI spent as many as 60 days in the Parchman Penitentiary. — The SCLC, SNCC, students and others work throughout the South to bring about the recogni- tion of the civil rights of Blacks. — Rev. Ralph Abernathy (Beta Zeta 1948) and the congregation of the First Baptist Church are inte- gral in assisting Dr. King and the Freedom Riders in Montgomery, AL.
