Farrans Construction has completed a purpose-built, three-storey school for third level creative arts students for Big Creative Academy in London, in a FARRANS COMPLETES £12MBIG CREATIVE ACADEMY IN LONDON contract valued at £12m. The development saw the construction of a replacement school for the performing arts, a theatre and ancillary café for pupils, staff and occasional community use. Big Creative Academy’s curriculum is specialist so the spaces are bespoke designed to these needs, including media studios, make-up classes, music recording, mixing and control rooms, all centred around a fully functioning theatre to bring courses together at the heart of the school. The building comprises a 3- storey ‘L’ shaped teaching block, connected to the theatre. Located to either side of the theatre are two double-height performance spaces. The site was c.1-hectare in size and included the footprint of a c.2,000m2 building with c.8,000m2 of car parking. Outdoor social spaces and a health and fitness zone are covered in porous bitmac with additional social spaces of soft landscaped areas including vegetable and herb gardens. www.farrans.com

grading possible for sustainable homes – meeting strict targets for CO2 emissions, water usage, ecology and waste – and remains one of the largest of its kind in the UK. With the completion of Phase 2, the award-winning scheme now houses 251 people in 63 homes. The second Phase, which contains 24 units follows Phase 1 which comprised 39 dwellings with a mixture of 2, 3- and 4-bedroom houses designed to meet Level 5 of the UK Code for Sustainable Homes. Each home has an efficient
building fabric and technologies installed to reduce the need for heating, with solar panels installed to reduce the electricity bills of the occupants. which will provide a modern, larger purpose-built facility for pupils with special needs. This is the second project that Henry Brothers has delivered for Alfreton Park Community Special School and the latest in a number of schemes that the company has worked on for Derbyshire County Council. The new single-storey building will replace outdated and unsuitable teaching facilities at the school’s existing site. These will be demolished once the new site is up and running. The building is expected to be completed by late 2021, with the school opening early in 2022. The Henry Brothers team building the new facility includes Maber architects and structural engineer HWA.
