ROCKLAND COMMUNITY GARDEN WELCOMES EVERYONE FOR RIBBON CUTTING

JOSEPH COPPOLINO joseph.coppolino@eap.on.ca

More than a year in the making, Rockland’s community garden is set to open this weekend with a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by the mayor. Since coming up with the idea in January 2022, Sarah Lacombe, her fiancé Matthew Byrne, and her project partner Stephanie Marcil have been hard at work advocating for and organizing the Rockland Community Garden. They brought the idea to council in July 2022, convincing the city to offer up a plot of land in Patricia Charron Park. Residents received the announcement of a community garden well, quickly filling up membership spots and creating a waiting list for those looking to appease their green thumbs. Now the team has grown to more than a dozen volunteers who are ready to harvest the fruits of their labour. The dedicated team of gardeners, both expert and novice, have been working hard hosting fundraisers, filling garden beds, raising fences, building sheds and, of course, planting fruits and veggies. June 24 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., organi- zers welcome residents to the garden’s grand opening event, replete with a mayoral guest of honour, an Indigenous ceremony led by the Indigenous Circle, a tour and a look at the future vision for the garden.
