18. Stunning 1948 Leaf Football Complete Set (98) – #21 on the PSA Registry
Incredible 1948 Leaf complete set, fresh to the hobby, consigned by a longtime collector who compiled this set many decades ago with condition in mind. The 98-card set was the first of two sets issued by Leaf at the close of the 1940s, loaded with important rookies and Hall of Famers. The second half of the set is more difficult to locate than the first half, but completing a set in any grade is a challenge. This is a remarkable set, sharp and colorful, with tremendous eye appeal. Cor- ners are largely sharp and borders mostly crisp and white, with print registra- tion far above average for the issue. With a few minor exceptions, the set is crease free – at first glance a stunning EX-MT to NM set. Closer examination reveals that some of the cards (likely all of them) were once stored in a pho- to album or scrapbook, resulting in some minor remnants of black paper on the reverse of some of the cards and some spots of paper loss on others. We submitted the entire set to PSA, the result being a weighted GPA of 3.52, good enough for #21 on the current Registry. The grades are partially a result of cen- tering, partially the aforementioned reverse issues (largely in the high num- bers), and partially the unforgiving grading standards of today; we believe the set would garner a grade a full point higher were it submitted five years ago. Regardless of the technical grade, this is a remarkable set, one that garnered much attention upon our posting of video of the cards in their plastic bind- er pages several months ago, before submitting to PSA. Eye appeal is off the charts. A breakdown of the technical grades is as follows: PSA NM-MT 8 (OC – 2 cards): #42, #43. PSA NM 7 (3 cards): #20, #36 Dudley (HOF RC), #37 Connor (HOF RC). PSA EX-MT 6 (7 cards): #9, #15, #25, #31, #34 #38, #44. Baugh (HOF RC). PSA EX-MT 6 (MC – 1 card): #7. PSA EX 5 (10 cards): #2, #4 Walker (HOF RC), #5, #8, #14, #22 Van Buren (HOF RC), #26 Waterfield (HOF RC) #27, #32, #41. PSA VG-EX+ 4.5 (1 card): #11. PSA VG-EX 4 (26 cards): #6 Layne (HOF RC), #12, #17, #18, #23, #24, #28, #29 Trippi (HOF RC), #30, #33, #35, #40, #46, #47, #48, #49, #51, #52 Nomellini (HOF RC), #53, #55, #60, #62, #65, #78, #86, #87. PSA VG+ 3.5 (1 card): #19 George McAfee (HOF RC). PSA VG 3 (12 cards): #1 Luckman (HOF RC), #10, #13 Lujack (correct), #39, #45, #54 Bednarik (HOF RC), #63, #70, #73, #77, #83, #88. PSA VG 3 (MK – 1 card): #98. PSA GOOD+ 2.5 (7 cards): #16 Pihos (HOF RC), #59, #66, #72, #79, #82, #95. PSA GOOD 2 (21 cards): #50, #57, #58, #61, #64, #67, #68, #69, #71, #74, #76, #81, #84, #85, #89, #90, #92, #93, #94, #96, #97. PSA FR 1.5 (1 card): #3 Turner (HOF RC). In addition, five cards were returned ungraded by PSA for being miscut: #21 , #56, #75, #80 and #91. This is a phenomenal set. Virtually every lower-grade card in the group boasts eye appeal in excess of the assigned grade; aside from centering and some instances of light corner wear, the majority of the condition issues relate to the the card reverse. The result is a tremendous grouping of cards, fresh to the hobby from a longtime collector who assembled the set long before the days of grading. 98 cards total. MINIMUM BID: $1,500
