24. 1936 Goudey World Wide Gum #51 Joe DiMaggio (HOF RC) – SGC VG-EX+ 4.5

In our 13-year history we have sold quite a few items related to the Yankee Clipper, but in reviewing our archives, this is the first example of his 1936 World Wide Gum rookie card we have ever han- dled. It is a rarity in comparison with many of DiMaggio’s other early cards, as SGC has graded just 24 and PSA an additional 38; the Canadian Goudey issue is simply tougher to find. It is also worth noting that just 14 of the 72 graded examples rate higher than this. This example is a pleasing mid grade one; well-centered from left-to-right with some honest cor- ner wear that reflects minor handling but not abuse. The image quality is strong, with only minor surface wear, DiMaggio’s portrait reflecting the image of a budding superstar with the pressure that comes with high fan expectations. Joltin’ Joe would not disappoint, he finished 8th in the MVP voting his rookie season, batting .323 with 29 home runs and 125 runs batted in, helping the Yan- kees capture their first of four consecutive World Championships. Deceptively rare, the card is far more difficult to obtain than almost all DiMaggio’s mainstream issues, the only exceptions being his Zeenut pre-rookie cards. Though those earliest cardboard appearances picture him in the uniform of the San Francisco Seals, his Major League rookie card is right here, the extremely difficult 1936 World Wide Gum issue. MINIMUM BID: $20,000 Young Ted Williams, all of 20 years old and seen here in his rookie season on his rookie card, shows off the swing that launched 521 lifetime home runs. Still brightly white and with wonderful cor- ners and edges, only a small spot of foxing in the right border, which this issue is known for, can be seen marring the obverse. The back is a match to the front, and the card is an appealing one of a high-demand, first-tier Hall-of-Famer in NM PSA 7 fashion. An extraordinarily crisp and sharp, virtually untouched card that initially came to us several years ago from an original-owner collec- tion, carefully stored away for decades by the family of the young 1930s collector, freshly graded by PSA within the last several years. The winning bidder will be just the third owner of this fresh card, a well-centered stunner with outstanding provenance. MINIMUM BID: $10,000 25. 1939 Play Ball #92 Ted Williams (HOF RC) – PSA NM 7
