Alzheimer support The Société Alzheimer des Laurentides support group for Anglophones will re- sume its meetings September 17 at the Lachute Residence, 377 Principale. The sessions, held from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., are free for caregivers. Families and caregivers in the Laurentians have the opportunity to attend the monthly group meetings with a counsellor. Participants can exchange experiences with other people living in the same cir- cumstances, get information on the evo- lution of the disease, touching on mem- ory, judgment, reasoning, insecurity, loss of skills, find ways to understand beyond words and to be understood. Wildlife occupying SNC lands that may be hunted depend on the season, and include deer, moose, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, woodcock, ducks, and rabbits. Craig emphasized that hunters should ex- ercise caution, including wearing bright colours (blaze orange). FINCH | He who hesitates loses the chance to save $20. South Nation Conservation is remind- ing hunters they have until September 1 to take advantage of discounted fees for hunting on SNC lands. From January 1 to August 31, the fee is $30; September 1, the cost is set at $50. “The two-tiered fee structure better re- flects the demand on staff according to the time of year,” said SNC Senior Forestry Technician Chris Craig. “It’s in the hunters’ best interest to get the letter of permission before September 1 to save some money.” Craig emphasized that hunters on SNC lands without permission may be charged or fined. He notes that all hunters are re- quired by law to get written permission before entering private lands or tracts ad- ministered by SNC or other agencies. To obtain a letter of permission visit the SNC website (www.nation.on.ca), and complete the form and send it in to the agency’s office. A valid hunting licence must be produced. No matter the fee paid, letters of permission are effective for each open season through a full year. It’s a common misconception that be- cause lands are owned by a public agency they may be used without permission. Quite the opposite: because lands are in- tended for the benefit of all, they must be managed in a way that ensures safety and well-being. “We simply cannot have hunt- ers in unknown numbers accessing lands while others use these areas for recreation, organized hunting and other activities. It’s not safe,” says Craig. The authority owns some 10,000 acres, including forests and wetlands, distrib- uted across its 4,000-square-kilometre watershed. With permission, SNC allows hunting on its properties with a few ex- ceptions related to public safety and for- est operations. “We have no objection to orderly, or- ganized hunting parties using our lands with proper written consent,” Craig said. “Responsible hunting is beneficial to the ecosystem.” Hesitate and miss hunting discount
