There’s nothing quite like that moment when you find a new pup to join the family. Almost everybody’s heart melts when they look into those big, dopey puppy eyes, but when you find the perfect match for your family, it’s on an entirely different level. Back in April, my daughter’s boyfriend, Sean, and I headed over to the Yucaipa Animal

goofy) German shepherd, but we were forced to leave him behind, and we left dogless that day.

On June 2, Sean and I were headed to a gender reveal party out in — you guessed it — Yucaipa. Since we were in the area, we decided to give YAPS one more try. Right away, Sean walked to the kennel where his German shepherd pal had been, only to discover that it was now full of puppies! I’ve seen my share of pups, but I have to say, these German shepherd, Labrador, bull mastiff mixes were something else. Sean picked out a small, fluffy, chubby guy, while I fell in love with another. Totally enamored with these two new buddies, we brought Liberty to YAPS for a short canine meet-and-greet. Immediately, the short chubby pup, named Bartholomew (or Bart for short), started playing with Liberty with no problems, showing us that he was the one we needed to bring home.

Charred Chili-Cheese Corn

You’ll find all of the flavors of elote, Mexican street corn, in this dish, without any of the mess. It’s the rare side that can outshine any main course. INGREDIENTS

• 1/4 cup fresh lime juice • 2 ounces fresh cotija cheese (or feta), crumbled • 1/4 cup cilantro • Salt and pepper, to taste

• 4 ears of corn, husked • 4 tablespoons high-smoke- point oil, such as canola or vegetable • 1 large shallot, thinly sliced • 1/2 red chili (such as Freson) or jalapeño, thinly sliced 1.
