it the number of SKUs placed on a single pallet. Emerg- ing brands also often work with co-manufacturers rather than producing items in their own facilities, meaning their supply chains are less mature. This, in turn, presents op- portunities to introduce creative designs and eliminate unnecessary costs. Because new brands often get only one chance to capture a member’s attention, their graphic design and messaging are frequently much bolder to max- imize visibility. Evaluating Packaging Done Right Within Costco’s distinctive retail environment, success is clearly defined: the product arrives in a premium state, with an unmistakable value proposition. The member should be able to instantly identify the product type and its specific attributes and size, which allows them to translate this information as it relates to other options. However, if packaging does not hold up through the system, the prod- uct won’t present well within the store. Unclear messaging means a member can’t easily discern what makes the item better than the product next to it. In a highly rationalized space where multiple other brands are waiting to claim an open spot, a failed message means the likelihood of get- ting a second chance is exceptionally low. By prioritizing supply chain efficiency and clear com- munication, packaging design can become the primary mechanism for brands to secure their footprint, optimize volume and build lasting trust with members.
