Dulux Decorator Centre has played a pivotal role in bringing Nelson Place Student Accommodation in Belfast to life through paint. The merchant’s involvement in the project was not just about supplying paint, it involved working in collaboration with main contractor GRAHAM and painting contractor (and Dulux Connect member) CB Contracts to create a state- of-the-art living space for students. Nelson Place is one of the largest student complexes in Northern Ireland. The £48m project was led by GRAHAM’s Building North team and will help to ease the pressure of students looking for accommodation in the city. The complex is comprised of 774 bedrooms set across 245,000sqft. Students have access to a shared sports and games hall, wellness room,
physiotherapy suite, café, gym and social areas. From December 2021 until July 2024, when the project was completed, up to 240 dedicated professionals from different professions were on site each day. To ensure the smooth running of operations, GRAHAM utilised Building Information Modelling to provide a structured workflow throughout the build and to reduce snagging. Before the official opening, the site welcomed the famous Dulux dog for a ‘site inspection and a paw of approval’. A spokesperson from GRAHAM said, “We were delighted to recently welcome the celebrity guest from Dulux to our student residence project at Nelson Place in Belfast. “Everyone had been hard at work to finish the project, so this was a welcome
moment of relaxed fun before the final push to hand over this impressive student accommodation in time for the 2024 autumn student intake.” CHOOSING THE RIGHT PAINT FOR THE PROJECT For this student accommodation, it was vital that the paint used could provide durability, stain-resistance and longevity to stand up to the regular use of the building. Therefore, the Dulux Decorator Centre team worked in partnership with all parties to advise on the paints and coatings that could deliver these benefits. Dulux Trade Diamond Matt was used in the bedrooms, kitchens and dining rooms, as well as the corridors and on stairwell walls. Its tough, water-based formulation offers excellent opacity and coverage, as well as superior resistance
