Once known as Ve- liki Vračar, this hill was transformed into the green lungs of the city in the 1930s, when the monumental Astro- nomical Observatory was built at its very peak, according to the project of Czech architect Jan Dubovi. Thanks to a forest of dense oak and ash, com- bined with constant air currents, the temperature here is always significantly lower than in the city centre. Walking through its thick shade reveals the ob- servatory‘s white, retro-futuristic pavil- ions and a mystical pre-war tower that provides a clear view of the Danube. Ispod Tašmajdanskog parka i Cr- kve Svetog Marka krije se kompleks podzemnih pećina i laguma u kojima je konstantno tokom cele godine između 12 i 15 stepeni, zbog čega je džemperić usred avgusta obavezan komad odeće. Ovaj podzemni svet ima nevero- vatnu istoriju. Prve ozbiljnije zahvate napravili su Rimljani, koji su pre dve hiljade godina na ovom mestu otvo- rili kamenolom od čijeg je kamena iz- građen rimski Singidunum. Vekovima kasnije, pećine su služile kao skloni- šte za narod tokom opsade Beogra- da u Prvom srpskom ustanku, dok su
ih Nemci u Drugom svetskom ratu pretvorili u jedno od naj- savremenijih podzemnih skloništa u Evropi sa sopstvenim agregatima i zalihama vode, odakle je general Ler rukovodio vojnim operacijama. Iznad ovog podzemnog lavirinta nalazi se prelepi Taš- majdanski park, idealan za letnji predah na klupama, a tik uz njega uzdiže se monumentalna Crkva Svetog Marka. Izgrađe- na između dva rata po uzoru na manastir Gračanicu, ova cr- kva je jedna od najvećih u zemlji i u svojoj unutrašnjosti čuva sarkofag sa moštima cara Dušana, nudeći miran i svež pro- stor za kontemplaciju nakon izlaska iz dubine zemlje.

During the summer, these markets represent genuine treasure troves of colours, aromas and noise, where the spir- it of old Belgrade can be felt at every step and where locals buy fresh watermelons, home-grown tomatoes and figs. Con- tinuing down the famous boulevard leads to the Monument to Vuk Karadžić and the adjacent park that’s also named after this philologist and language reformer. Here you can relax in the shade of trees and enjoy the view of the monument that was erected in 1937.
