Things look sort of bad.” “That sure is right,” he answered anxious­ ly. “What’s on your mind?” “How well do you know these ranchers?” I asked. “Pretty well,” he said. “All right, then go out and get the word around for them to meet you tonight a t w h a t e v e r ranch you think will be best suited and I ’ll go there with you and pre­ sent my plan,” I said. It certainly is amazing how fast word can get around among a bunch of ranchers even when it’s done on the quiet. As the ranchers started leaving town, I wandered over to Fancy Frank’s place to see how he and his men were taking it. To say they were puzzled is put­ ting it mildly. “Guess they got cold feet,” A1 Ruffman, Fancy Frank’s right-hand man growled. “And it’s a good thing they’re leaving while they all are able to because if they’d hung around much longer some of them would have had to be carried home,” another man said. A t the Ben Willing ranch, to which the sheriff told the ranch­ ers to come, we found about 15 of them waiting. Even some of the wives came too. After the sheriff greeted them, he introduced me by saying, “Folks, this is Leonard Eilers. He’s a friend of mine and happened to ride into town today. He’d like to talk to us. He thinks he has a plan that may prove help­ ful in our time of need.” The place became still as death when I got up before that bunch of rugged people who had come West to establish a home and make an honest living. Their faces all turned toward me and their eyes filled with a light of anxiety. I breathed another prayer, asking God to take over and to get a hold of all their hearts and minds. I talked to them first about their families and how much I realized they all wanted to preserve their
