Jared Franklin is one of Florida’s leading experts for invasive plant and animal management at the 110,000-acre Rookery Bay Reserve. That’s a big job! Non-native plants such as melaleuca, Brazilian pepper, cogon grass and climbing ferns have invaded Florida’s public conservation land, along with a long list of invasive birds, mammals and reptiles such as iguanas and pythons. Jared will tell us about this and Rookery’s Prescribed Fire program for this coming season.

Chairman Each day that goes by has more and more members returning to the island and coming back to the Club! It is great to renew friendships, hear how family is doing, and generally catch up. It's also great to have these returning members rediscover the Club. I think it is a different place than when they left in the spring. Those of us who live here full time have experienced that difference - but it is fun to see the reaction of those who were away much of the summer! I am referring to, on one hand, the improved dining menus, food quality and level of service at the Club. But I am also referring to the way our management staff is working together! There is improved communication and a desire on everyone's part to make the Club welcoming and inviting for members and guests! If you have not yet been to the Club, I encourage you to make a reservation and experience it for yourself! We look forward to seeing you back this Season and enjoying the Club! Dave Everitt Dave Everitt Reservations Please! Please remember to make your reservations for dinner and events at the Club at least two days before the event. Chef Jono and his Staff like to be prepared in order to have the right amount of food and beverage. Also, when you make your reservation for a specific time, please be prepared to be shown to your table at that time. We appreciate your help as this also helps the kitchen Staff serve you in a timely manner.

Member Events

It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year! And December will prove to be the most fun at the club. Starting with the Members Holiday Dinner and Dance on Friday, December 2. Members will join in to sing along with the Mike Nardi Group. Then, there is the Boat Parade the following week, December 17, which is one of the most memorable events of the season with Members boats joining up with others to sail through Marco Island. The Club hosts a wonderful dinner and viewing opportunity.

Angela Holt

Christmas Eve dinner at the Club is special. There will be several seatings, so make your reservations early. New Year's Eve will bring the year to a close with a rockin' time at the Club. Naples DJ Scott will bring the house down. It's a dress-up affair, so plan in advance. There is a Marco Midnight dining planned in the early evening, followed by the 8:30 dinner and dance which lasts until Midnight. All these events, in addition to Evening Colors, Twilight Golf, weekly card games, and Book Club make it a great December. Look out for the eblasts and keep a printout of the Club event calendar handy. Let's wrap up 2022 with a bang!

Membership

Membership Updates Please help me to welcome Deb & Des McDonald back to our Club. They were Trial members last season and decided to join the Club as they returned to the island from their summer home in Erie PA. Community Support Speaking of Community Support, be sure to see the advertisement for the Love of Cats Gala , another organization we support. Jan & Jim Rich are members who created the organization. The fundraiser is Saturday, January 28 th and will be held at the Club. Check with Jan if you are interested in attending this casino event! We are still collecting for the Food Pantry in the lobby. Keep bringing in non-perishable items and we will make sure they get over to the Food Pantry. This year especially, those less fortunate need food due to Hurricane Ian and inflation. Let us help to make this a special Thanksgiving for our neighbors.

Vicki Bretthauer

Toys for Tots this year is going to be great! We have collected over $3,000 in cash and checks so far along with all the toys you all have delivered to us! Let’s hope we can break our record of over $5,000 collected last year! Thanks to our new staff members Missy Duffy (Dockmaster), Youssef Qualidi (F&B Manager), and Chef Brad Reich along with some of our Marina Equity members who all pitched in for a marvelous Dock Stroll and Clambake with some proceeds going to Toys for Tots! A good time was had by all! New Committee Members Maureen Bauwens, Karen Bostrom and Cindy Kroeger are all new members of the Membership Committee. They all are “newbies” to the Club with less than four years of seniority between all of them! They will help us to upgrade our ideas so that we can be attractive to new members! Remember, the best members are those members who are referred by others so bring your friends to the Club to see Our member JoAnn Leach is in physical therapy for a lot of weeks as she has broken her arm and her leg. If you have a chance, please drop her a note or a holiday card to keep her spirits up! If you need her mailing address feel free to contact me at vickib777@sbcglobal.net I hope you enjoy a wonderful holiday season with friends and family! all that we have to offer! Cards for JoAnn Leach Members Recruiting Members Our Member Recruiting Member Program is in full swing for FY2023! The Recruiting Member and new Member each receive a $100 gift certificate to use for food and beverage on a Wednesday, Thursday or Saturday Evening or at Sunday Brunch as long as joining fees were paid. Bring us new Members and celebrate with them!

Human Resources Committee

By now you have hopefully experienced some significant changes in your dining experience at the Club. Remember last season? The “great resignation” was in full swing and we could not find quality servers, food runners or cooks -- nor could just about anyone else in the hospitality industry in Southwest Florida! We were understaffed in the front of the house and struggling to meet legitimate expectations on member experience. The solution was found in a two-fold strategy: retaining the full-time

Kevin Hennessy

staff we had and recruiting experienced seasonal staff. While time will tell over the next few months, we believe we have set the stage to successfully meet the challenge. The H2B seasonal workers are now on board and fully engaged. They bring with them many years of experience in hospitality from around the world (including native recipes like the jerk chicken prepared recently by our new Jamaican cook). Carrie, Youssef and Marla have created an engaging and thoughtful training protocol for all eight workers so they can hit the ground running. The initial feedback we have received from members so far has been very positive, and the workers themselves are delighted to work in such an inviting and friendly environment. For the first time in some years we are fully staffed in the kitchen and dining room. A lone “thank you” in not enough to express our gratitude to our members who have warmly welcomed our new H2B staff, learning their names, and treating them with the same respect and warmth you have always shown to our year-around permanent staff. Dining surveys of our members reflect continuing improvement in food quality, presentation and table service. Our Go Fund Me project – thanks to the generosity of our member s - generated over $19,000 to provide financial assistance to staff who incurred property damage in Hurricane Ian. We continue to be a very desirable venue for weddings. And, thanks to publicity generated by our Marketing and Communications Committee, we were recently voted The Best Yacht Club in the Naples Area, ranking higher than our friends at the Naples Yacht and Sailing Club and Naples Yacht Club! Steady management and experienced staff, along with engaged members, make an unbeatable combination! I encourage everyone to dine at the Club and experience our new path forward to make member experience a truly enjoyable one. Kevin Hennessy Chair, HR Committee

15

Marketing & Communications

Looking back at 2022, the Communications Committee has been busy! Following the Communication Protocols developed in April 2021, the Committee has received positive comments from members about the reduced emails received from the Club. At the same time, they receive timely information. In the Spring, as part of the Operations Team, Vicki and Michelle meet with staff bi-weekly to discuss details of upcoming events. This is very helpful to Club Operations as it ensures we obtain information and details available to inform members on a timely basis. In May this year, we again sponsored the annual member survey and provided the results to the Board. Using professional photographers for many events has proven helpful for our website, press releases, and social media. While we no longer rely solely on Members for all our photos, we enjoy receiving member photos to share! This fall, we tweaked the menus slightly for a more modern look, updated unique menu designs (Boaters Night, Sunset Cruise, etc.), and created templates to make the creation process more straightforward and afford consistency in style, font, etc. Our Social Media sites on Facebook and Instagram continue to increase in followers. This is a great way to publicize who we are and what we do. Do you like or follow us? We worked with Northstar: • We offered training sessions on using our App, and members who attended the sessions found them very helpful. We also have members available during Happy Hour to answer questions about the app. • To have the Member Card added to the App. This is helpful when visiting Reciprocal Clubs as it includes your picture to help identify you as an MIYC member. (Have you added your photo to the Roster?) We periodically review our website's public and private sides and look for ways to improve the look and functionality. One particular highlight of the past year was that we were voted Best Yacht Club in the Naples area as part of the Naples Daily News annual contest in September – just before Hurricane Ian landed. We celebrated on November 11 th with a presentation at the Club by Dave Campagna from Naples Daily News . I want to thank the members of my Committee for their diligence, guidance, and dedication: • Ellie Everitt, for putting together the Anchorlines every month – your eye for layout is fantastic. • Susan Hieftje for working with the Bridge on communicating with members on all the boating activities – I appreciate her timeliness and attention to detail. • Carol Comeaux - for working with me on maintaining the website – keeping all the information up to date, and helping to promote the Club through Press Releases. • Linda Marr - for creating the monthly calendars and the new menu templates. • Vicki Bretthauer for always being available to answer my questions and sharing her knowledge and history of the Club. • Deb Melges – for always being available to proofread emails and Anchorlines articles. Your keen eye is very much appreciated. Michelle Hennessy, Chair -- Marketing & Communications

Safety & Training

IMPORTANT REMINDER TO ALL MIYC BOAT OWNERS

Dear Friends, It’s the time of year to again remind you that Club bylaws require all boat owners participating in any club sponsored boating event, that YOU MUST have and pass a yearly SAFETY BOAT INSPECTION. This is based on the calendar year, so new inspections are required as of January 2023, and all previous inspection stickers are deemed invalid. Upon a successful inspection, you will receive a 2023 Safety Sticker to affix to your boat’s hull or windshield. These inspections are free by appointment and are readily available. We are fortunate to have several inspectors available to our club members, including our own: Paul Soden, (914-450-8066).

Jim Rich

For your convenience, please refer to the MIYC website under Safety and Education. Click on Required Safety Inspections. From there, click on Safety Equipment Requirements for a sample of the actual form the inspector will use to help you prepare for a successful inspection. You will also see the contact names and phone numbers of all inspectors. Please acquire your Vessel Safety Inspection in January as soon as possible, so as not to miss out on any of the great boating events we have scheduled for 2023! Once you have your decal, please notify me so that I can update your status. I can be contacted in the following ways: Phone: 239-248-4166 Text: same Email: Catman1048@gmail.com BE SURE TO GIVE ME YOUR NAME, BOAT NAME, LENGTH, BEAM, DRAFT, AND POWER REQUIREMENTS. This will also help us update any existing records. Thank you for your immediate attention to this notice! Jim Rich Safety and Training Officer

Fleet Captain/Sail After delays due to issues with the Department of Florida Environmental and hurricane Ian, we anticipate resuming High School Sailing in December. We suffered a fair amount of damage due to the hurricane and lost three boats. Fortunately, we had prepared well prior to the storm or the damage could have been much worse. Rocky, Lee, our high school students along with the crew from “Flying Dutchman” and I moved everything off the beach and secured all other equipment. I want to give a big thanks to “Flying Dutchman” crew members who selflessly just showed up at the sailing site and asked how they could help! We could not have done all we did without their help!

Dwyn von Bereghy

• Lucille from Pennsylvania, Stewardess • Susan from Pennsylvania, Deck Hand • Heidi from Atlanta, Chief Stewardess • Tamoy from Jamaica, Chief Engineer • Carlos from Mexico, Engineer • Thomas from South Africa, Bosun

We anticipate six returning sailors in December along with five new sailors. Sadly, with the devastation suffered at Edison Sailing Center in Fort Meyers, with whom we normally conduct regattas, we will not have any regattas this season. However, we will continue Saturday instruction and local sailing for our students. And of course, we anticipate another banner year for our Summer program which will begin in June. The program has grown from 45 students three years ago to 140 students last year and we anticipate additional students for the 2023 program. Best Regards,

Dwyn von Bereghy Fleet Captain/Sail

There’s a Daytime Activity for Everyone at MIYC!

Aquafit at MIYC Aquafit classes take place at the MIMA pool at 10 am on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy water aerobics - a low-impact activity that takes the pressure off your bones, joints and muscles. Water also offers natural resistance, which can help strengthen your muscles and you can add resistance devices to burn more calories! Exercising in the pool provides the toning and cardiovascular benefits of exercise on dry land with less strain and stress plus it allows for a greater range of motion helping with flexibility and balance. More importantly, it is enjoyable fun! As with any other exercise routine, just be certain you get medical clearance from your health care provider before taking the plunge. Dock Stroll Toys for Tots Recap This past month at Riverside Marina we hosted our first Dock Stroll event on A dock. We had a great turnout and the weather cooperated perfectly! This was a wonderful opportunity to mingle on the docks with the boat owners and their lovely crews and get

Missy Duffy

a chance to sneak a peek at some of those big boats we always see from the outside. From the Flying Dutchman passing out caviar and champagne, to Everglade’s photo-op with the infamous “Sophie,” it was a memorable night for all! Every boat owner on A dock that was in town for the event participated and were kind enough to open their boats for visiting. Many boats also provided snacks, and the Burgee Bar opened early for cocktails. Carrie, Chef Brad, Youseff and their teams pulled off an impressive spread and we donated 10% of the proceeds from the evening to Toys for Tots. Thanks to the generous donations we received, we were able to purchase countless toys for children in need in our area. The staff had a great time working together to pull off this event, and we hope to do many more like this in the future. A big thank you goes out to all who participated and made donations to our Toys for Tots Fundraiser -- and special thanks to my husband Evan who took some great pictures with his camera. From the staff here at Riverside Marina, we love seeing members strolling our beautiful docks, so feel free to come take a walk anytime! Missy Duffy Riverside Marina at MIYC Dockmaster

Mariners Fund The Mariners Fund is a way to finance extraordinary MIYC needs; things outside of the normal budget; Club enhancements that will make the member experience better and up to date. For example, the Burgee Bar renovation was made possible entirely by member donations. The bar was expanded, new drop-down window covers were installed and attractive curtains and valances were added. The Mariners Fund also paid to upgrade the Club’s sound system and supported the installation of a new dimmer system to enhance lighting in the Harbour Room. All these improvements were made possible by the generous support of our members. A donation to the Mariners Fund is a symbol of MIYC member commitment. How Can I Donate? You can make a general donation or donate for a specific project. We have identified a number of needs and wishes, which are listed in a binder just below the recognition plaque in the lobby. If you’d like to donate, please download the Mariners Fund Donation Form, on which you can indicate the project you wish to support, the amount of donation and how you wish to pay (separate check, credit card or Club monthly statement.) If there is something special you would like to see happen and would like to financially support, please let any member of the Mariners Fund Committee know. Mariners Fund Recognition Levels A Mariners Fund recognition plaque in the lobby hallway honors the cumulative contributions Members have made. Bronze $ 500 Silver $ 2,500 Gold $10,000 Platinum $20,000 Diamond $50,000 Sapphire $100,000 Final Voyage – If you have enjoyed the Club, please consider a gift from your estate.
