her — not wanting to intrude upon her thoughts. She said finally, “ You’ll probably laugh and say I'm too .young to sound morbid, but — honestly — sometimes I get the feeling that — well, that God has passed me by. I can’t really explain it, but He just doesn’t seem personal. It’s like being all alone in a huge uni verse where my own little puny self really doesn’t matter. Frankly, life just doesn’t add up.” The doubts and questions o f a seven teen-year-old? Yes, and if we’re really honest we’ll confess that we, too, are prone to ask the same perfectly human questions — questions that don’t always “ add up” to answers: Does it really matter about me? Why the storm and turmoil? Why do gloomy clouds so often crowd out the sun? Why sickness and disease and heartache and perplexity? Why the long, long waiting, the utter sense of futility sometimes? Is God interested in my fears, my failures, my hurts and anxieties? Does He want to do anything about one single person — me? The answer, without smug over-sim plification, is still assuredly YES ! He can and He wants to satisfy the deepest longings o f our hearts. He wants our relationship with Him to be personal. He wants to free us to be His. What we need so desperately to remember is that our vast universe, which so often seems like a gigantic impersonal com puter, is still our Father’s world. We are not governed by fate, but by our Father! Not chance, but His choice! Not a guessing-game, but His guid ance! It matters to Him about you, about me! Jesus said, “ Are not two sparrows sold fo r a penny? And not one o f them will fall to the ground without your Father’s will. Fear not, therefore, you are o f more value than many spar rows.” He does not pass us by. He assures us that His thoughts toward us are thoughts o f kindness and mercy. Before the world came into being, we were chosen to be the objects o f His lavish love. He has, according to His own word, graven us on the palms o f His hands. What a place of protection and safety! Moment by moment, day and night, always and forever in the palm of Him who calls us His very own! So when we don’t always see the goal, we need NOT distrust the Guide. He is faithful that promised. Cast down? Perhaps—that we might learn to trust more completely. Tested? Yes, that we might learn to claim His unlimited resources. Passed by? Never, Never!
