Train yourself in god liness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come” (I Timo thy 4:7, 8). Why do we need to train to be godly? I can think of three reasons: The first is to be prepared, ready for the great moments of life. And great moments come only occasionally. A man prac tices football many hours a week, and finally in a game comes his chance for some open field run ning. That’s his great moment. He’s ready, he takes his oppor tunity. But he couldn’t do it with out the preparation. “Bear” Bryant, coach of the national champion University of Alabama football team, said, “ You can’t live soft all week and play tough on Saturday.” This is what Paul means by “ Train yourself in godliness.” Do it every day, every moment, to be ready when the battle rages, when the emergency comes. Jere miah 12:5 says, “ If you have raced with men on foot, and they have wearied you, how will you compete with horses? And if in a safe land you fall down, how will you do in the jungle of the Jordan?” The second reason for training is to endure. Some things are hard to take: limitations, circum stances, experiences. You can’t resolve them; you have to live with them. Just plain stick it put. Some Christians don’t end well. God is at work in us. However,
