22127 - CAI Feedback 2024 COMPLETE v1

CAI Essential Principles for Installers Keith Bail FSCTE – Trainer and Consultant KB Consultancy.

when revisited, it starts to make a lot more sense than it did years ago.

As a consultant and trainer, it has been my pleasure to work with and train many installers, engineers, designers and salespeople within our industry over the years. It has, however, amazed me at times how much people have either forgotten or never knew in the first place about some very basic things, such as ‘What is an ohm?’ or ‘How do you use a multimeter?’ Personally, I have been tinkling about with electronics since taking my first valve car radio apart over 50 years ago! Yes – Valves! It was from my Dad’s VW Beetle and it had a 24V battery. The radio stopped working when he accidentally disconnected the alternator from his car whilst the engine was running, and the radio was on! I thought I could fix it. Note: I said 24V, this was d.c. Of course, from two car batteries in series, NOT 240V a.c. from the mains! I survived this first real encounter with electricity and since then, electronics and all things electrical have fascinated me. Most things are second nature now. However, many people I meet have never studied things like Ohm’s Law or wouldn’t know what a clamp meter was. There are many other very basic bits of information that can make our jobs easier and more efficient when it comes to finding faults on systems even simple ones. It does help to know a little bit about how things work. This course was written to provide a basic knowledge of lots of things that have either been forgotten, never learnt or perhaps misunderstood in the first place. Sometimes

Maybe these are some of the things you always wanted to know but were afraid to ask; n What is an ohm? n What is Ohm’s Law? n What is the difference between d.c. & a.c.? n What is the UK mains voltage? n Why do we use 110Va.c. on site? n Will a Triax power supply run a Whyte switch? n What is important about 75-ohm cable? n Why should we fit a terminator? n What is a d.c. block?

n What is a watt? n What is a dB?

n How does a diode work? n What is a clamp meter? n How do I use a multimeter?

n How can I check the voltage is OK? n What is the latest version of HDMI?

n What is RS232? n What is a QLED? n Is that socket live?
