Assessment & Technical Executive Report 2023/24
Kevin Dawson, Assessment and Technical Executive FSCTE ASET
Introduction 2024! - what will this year bring to the table? I will be honest and say I haven’t a clue. World affairs change in what seems to be an almost daily affair, let alone the UK’s own economy which is fragile at best. That said, while on my rounds in 2023, it was a surprise to see the upbeat messages and comments I had from many members who were doing OK. By that, I mean business was pretty good and steady. Some members, mainly on the domestic side do continue to be quieter, even considering the many storms we have had over recent months. Streaming could be the reason here, but I think people generally are keeping their money in their pockets - hopefully this will change for the better in 2024. Assessments It has been a busy year assessment-wise for me. The highlight being a visit to our friends in Northern Ireland, where every CAI registered company apart from one, was available for assessment. I left home on the Monday morning and returned Friday evening that week, feeling proud of them all. It had taken less than a week to arrange the assessments, book the flights, hotel and car hire which was brilliantly efficient. I really can’t thank our NI members enough for the warmth and ease of arranging this visit, and the way I was greeted by every single member during that week.
At the time of writing this article, I am in the process of booking more diploma assessments. 2023 was a strong indicator of member companies using this approach for their employees, to enable qualification for the CSCS skilled worker cards. Don’t forget the CAI Diploma is the easiest route for your engineers to qualify for the skills card, and the cheapest method by far. Please get in touch with Amanda for more details on the process. I have included in this report some photographs of engineers completing their diploma assessments. Looking through them was a nice reminder of what this job is all about. SW@H assessments were not as strong as last year, but assessments do work on a five-year cycle. It will be interesting to see how this year works out on the re-certification process. Please assist me moving forward when it comes to booking assessments. I would appreciate it if you could make yourselves available to meet me whenever is convenient. I am fully aware you are all busy, and it is difficult to find that slot in your diaries. However, I used to be a member myself, so know how important the assessments are. We also communicate to the public, government bodies and other associations that we do assess our members for quality etc, and all members know they have to be assessed during their membership with CAI, so it’s good to get together when requested. I am also more than happy to meet at site if this makes life a little easier too.
