will be the proposed EnergyEast project of Calgary-based TransCanada Pipelines Ltd. The company has proposed a transconti- nental oil pipeline, using existing routes and building connections, that would stretch from Alberta to the oil refining and exporting outfits in Eastern Canada. A sec- tion of the proposed route could run near or through parts of East Hawkesbury and that has raised concerns among some resi- dents. “Over the next four years,” said Kirby, “that is something that will be on the (council) table.” TransCanada representatives met with East Hawkesbury council last year to ex- plain and answer questions about the pro- ject. One question council did get answered was whether or not there is any economic benefit to the township from the pipeline project. “They (TransCanada officials) said they’d be prepared to invest in our community,” said Mayor Kirby, adding that council now needs to press the company for specifics of how much and what kind of community investment is proposed. Now that he no longer has to worry about taking time out for a re-election campaign, Mayor Barton is looking over the issues the new council will need to address once the poll results are in and he knows who he will be working with at the council table. “I’m trying to keep the municipality on an even keel,” Barton said. “Infrastructure is our biggest headache, by far.”
Barton noted that the water towers in both L’Orignal and Vankleek Hill need upgrading in the next few years, and that there is a pressing need for a proper com- munity centre in L’Orignal. L’ORIGNAL | Gary Barton and Robert Kirby can relax a bit while watching their fellow mayors scramble around the hustings, seeking voter support at the end-of- October polls. The mayors of Champlain Township and East Hawkesbury Township achieve re-election by acclamation with- out having to buy a single campaign sign. For both mayors getting re-acclaimed means they can focus their attention du- ring the October election campaign period to tidying up outstanding business matters in their municipalities while waiting for the poll results to indicate whether or not they will have any newcomers to work on their councils. In Kirby’s case, he already knows the answer to that question is “yes”. “We are definitely going to have new members on our council,” said East Hawkes- bury’s mayor during an interview following the Sept. 24 regular session of the United Counties of Prescott-Russell council. “There are a few things we have to finish up,” Kirby said, listing as examples develop- ment of a splash pad for children’s use on the recreation front and getting a response from both levels of senior government on the township’s roadworks improvement funding aid requests. Mayor Kirby noted that one issue oc- cupying the attention of the new council
