Mining controls in works
Stolen ATV The Hawkesbury Ontario Provincial Po- lice (O.P.P.) detachment is investigating the theft of an all-terrain vehicle in Lefaivre. The theft of the ATV occurred February 13 or 14 at a Wharf Street residence. The cul- prit broke into a backyard shed and made off with a black and yellow 2004 Polaris Scrambler 500 c.c. ATV. Anyone with information on the matter is asked to contact Constable Mario Grat- ton. Catalytic converter thefts The public is being advised to be wary of catalytic converters thieves who have been pulling off heists in the Hawkesbury area over the last few months. In the most recent theft, crooks lifted a catalytic converter form a GMC Sierra truck that was parked in the backyard parking lot of the Performance Auto garage. Con- stable Michael Roy is investigating. 33 charges In the week of February 1 to 17, Hawkes- bury O.P.P. officers responded to 189 oc- currences and laid 33 charges. Officers in- vestigated two break-ins and five assaults. Seven thefts were reported. Four initia- tives were conducted; no impaired driving charges were laid. Criminal harassment charge A Hawkesbury man has been arrested af- ter police responded to a complaint from staff at the CIBC bank where a man who had been barred from the financial institu- tion had attended the branch February 13. The man who was acting in a suspicious and threatening manner towards some bank employees had been formally served a notice not to attend the business, police say. Patrick Senecal, 31, was charged with criminal harassment. He was later released and is scheduled to appear in court March 19. Liquor lifted In the late afternoon of February 14, of- ficers were sent to the scene of a theft at the Hawkesbury LCBO store where a man had just left with a bottle of vodka without paying. The suspect was arrested the next day when he was found passed out heavily in- toxicated in a snow bank on County Road 17 near Highway 34. Randy Kelso, 53, of Hawkesbury was charged with shoplifting and being in- toxicated in a public place. He was later released and is expected at court March 19. Summer job The detachment is seeking applications from students interested in a marine assis- tant position. The student will work along- side an O.P.P. marine operator on a police vessel. Applications will be accepted until March 2 at http://www.gojobs.gov.on.ca/SEP.asp, or the Career pages of www.opp.ca. Mischief Police are seeking the miscreant who threw yellow paint on the east side of the LCBO building in Hawkesbury between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. February 15. Anyone with information on any of these crimes is asked to call 613-632-2729 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. gŏđŏ

GRENVILLE-SUR-LA-ROUGE | A spike in mineral exploration has prompted Grenville-sur-la-Rouge to impose interim controls in an attempt to head off any problems that could be caused by min- ing operations. The goal is to ensure that the environ- ment and roads are not adversely affected by any future mineral extraction, noted Mayor John Saywell. “We are not sure what we are getting into,” he remarked. Until ramifications can be properly assessed, “It is best to put a brake on it.” Some obvious concerns about min- eral extractions are possible impacts on ground water. Plus, the municipality must also try to anticipate the effects addition- al truck traffic would have on municipal roads, observed Saywell. At the same time, the municipality could benefit from taxes imposed on resource exploitation. Grenville-sur-la-Rouge is already home to several pit and quarry operations. The municipality also features one of the oldest graphite mines in the country. The Miller Lump/Vein Graphite Mine has attracted the interest of aVancouver-based company, Canada Carbon, which carried out helicopter airborne testing at the site last summer. Located on a 15-square-kilo- metre parcel of land, the mine was worked in 1845 and was probably the first graphite operation in Canada. The quantity of graphite produced at the
