Charity Day - Munopa Year 13

A Slow Crash

On Wednesday we were pleased to Welcome Iain Mahony into the College to speak to our pupils in years 11 - 13.

His talk, aptly entitled ‘ A slow crash ’, outlined his story from young teen at a prestigious private school through to drug addiction and rehab by the age of 32. His story was one of small decisions that led him down this particular path but central to the story was his struggle to feel accepted, cope with bullying at school and difficulties at home. A lack of support and his inability to search for help when he needed it most meant that his self destruction continued until he came close to ending his life. He finally sought help at the age of 32 and spent 3 months in rehabilitation. His message was clear, he was not there to tell pupils what not to do, but to ensure they were aware of what his life had been and the amount of time he had wasted. His emotional and honest story encouraged pupils to think carefully about their choices and the people they surround themselves with, as well as not being afraid to seek support when it was needed.

This week we celebrated our third house charity day of the school year with Woolmer, the house came together to raise money for Great Ormond Street Children ’ s Hospital Charity (GOSH). Louis as head of house planned an own clothes day where everyone was encouraged to wear a touch of green. Alongside this was a bake sale and a guess the teacher from the baby photo. The tutor groups enjoyed guessing who was who and can agree it was actually pretty difficult at times. All the money raised from these activities will go to help research into childhood cancer and rare conditions as well as supporting facilities at the hospital. It was a successful day for the Queens community as we managed to help people in need of the amazing care that GOSH provides.
