Mental health affects everyone — whether you’re dealing with stress in your professional life or personal life, sometimes both, coping with a mental illness, or struggling with substance abuse. It may feel like you’re isolated and alone, but I promise you’re never alone in your hardships. We have progressed so much as a society, but there is still a massive stigma around mental health. This stigma largely exists because many people do not understand mental illnesses leading to a lot of negative attitudes and beliefs about those struggling with them. These misconceptions and false beliefs can lead to discrimination against people who have and are dealing with mental health issues. Because of this, people may not want to acknowledge that they are dealing with these struggles and try to suppress the way they are feeling. I believe that the stigma surrounding mental illness is largely generational. For example, my parents were baby boomers raised by parents who grew up during the Great Depression — a time of financial hardship and struggle. For this generation focused on survival, the idea of someone voicing that they were depressed or having a tough time was not easily understood, and vocalizing these types of concerns was frowned up. This generation passed down a mindset that you’re not entitled to your feelings and that it could always be worse. I believe that this generational minimization of feelings and thoughts has led many people not to seek the mental health help that they need to deal with their situations. Those who did seek help years ago often got labeled as “crazy” and problematic. Many folks who struggled with mental health in the past were sent to asylums and Know That You’re Not Alone When Struggling With Mental Health

underwent inhumane treatments such as shock therapy to “fix” them. Instead of helping these individuals, this form of therapy often made things worse. Today, we are now coming to a point where we can talk about these issues on a more regular basis. Talking about our mental health and the way we’re feeling is becoming more normalized, which I think will allow people to face their struggles and seek help that will benefit them. Today, if you are having trouble, there are multiple counseling options available to help you. You can go to a psychologist, mental health counselor, or NA and AA meetings to help you. Using these resources can help make a huge difference in your life. For more resources, you can check out my book, “Your Loved One Has Been Arrested: Get Answers Now,” which provides information on how and where you can find help for you or your loved ones. Go to MatthewKoneckyPA.com for more details. There are several mental health support hotlines you can reach out to as well. My top recommendations are BetterHelp.com, RemedyLive.com, NVF.org, and NamiFlorida.org. I care about you and your family, and I want nothing but the best for you. Never be afraid to ask for help — you’re never alone. The majority of people can empathize with your feelings because they most likely have had similar thoughts and feelings. If there is any way my firm and I can assist you, please reach out to us. We will be happy to help you in your time of need.

‘Looking for Alaska’ John Green has captured the hearts of millions of readers across the world, and now there is a movie inspired by his first novel, “Looking for Alaska.” This coming-of-age story follows a teenage boy as he searches for the meaning

of life. Then, a sudden tragedy strikes, and the boy and his friends must come to terms with the event. The movie shows the emotion, grief, and love the boy deals with on his journey. Pull out your tissues for this film; it’s sure to be a tear-jerker.

MATT’S BOOK OF THE MONTH ‘The Storyteller’ by Dave Grohl Dave Grohl has become America’s favorite rock ‘n’ roll dad. For those who don’t know who he is, Dave Grohl was Nirvana’s drummer in 1991 — a band that helped change rock and pop culture with their major label debut Nevermind. When Nirvana’s lead singer, Kurt Cobain, committed while visiting his older cousin in Chicago and seeing his first concert at the Cubby Bear lounge. He also mentions learning to play drums on pillows while taking a lesson from a jazz legend. (Fun fact: Where Dave saw his first concert is directly across from Wrigley Field, where the Chicago Cubs play, a venue I have been to multiple times!) This book has inspiring and hilarious tales that I’m sure you’ll enjoy.

suicide in 1994, Dave was left with a void. Struggling with what to do, he created a demo tape where he played all instruments and sang every song. He simply dubbed this demo “Foo Fighters.” Dave’s tape made its circulation, caught fire, and prompted a major label debut. From there, Dave formed a new band called the Foo Fighters, and for the last 27 years they’ve been one of the top rock bands in the world. In his new book, “The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music,” Dave shares various stories of his life that helped form who he is. For example, he talks about his first time hearing punk music

The sense you get from reading this book is that Dave can’t sit still. While not playing with the Foo Fighters, he may be helping drumming on another band’s album or starting a supergroup with members of Led Zeppelin. Unfortunately, this type of restlessness got him into trouble in Australia and led him to have a coffee-induced “heart attack.” You don’t have to like modern music to appreciate the American spirit that Dave has. His down-to-earth sensibility and work ethic can be appreciated by everyone. His travels lead him to two White House visits and multiple tours around the world.

“The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music” is a quick, fascinating read, and I enjoyed every page in this book. I highly suggest you read this book if you haven’t already.

Hate Souvenir Shopping? Let’s Make It Easy

Picking the Perfect Souvenir

A way to preserve or share a piece of your trip is to bring home a souvenir, but choosing a souvenir isn’t always a stress-free experience. How do you pick the perfect souvenir and not just the first thing you see in a tourist shop? Here are some tips for picking a truly meaningful gift for yourself or your loved ones. Who are you buying for? What are your recipient’s interests, or what do they spend the most time doing? If you’re buying for yourself and enjoy coffee, you might buy a local coffee blend to enjoy from home. However, if your recipient doesn’t enjoy coffee or rarely drinks it, that type of gift might not mean much to them. Is it legal to bring home? Whether you’re traveling domestically or internationally, there are many regulations that affect which souvenirs you can bring home. Even if you find the item in a tourist shop, that doesn’t mean it’ll be allowed into the country or even onto the plane. And the TSA does take this seriously. In 2012, two tourists were detained at the U.S. border for trying to bring home chocolate Kinder eggs — a specific kind that are illegal in the U.S. due to the potentially hazardous small toys inside.

Purchase a handicraft. Handicrafts — items created by local artisans — are awesome souvenirs! But make sure you buy where artisans actually sell their own goods, such as an open-air market. Unfortunately, while some popular tourist shops may sell “locally made goods,” many souvenirs intended for tourists are actually made by cheap manufacturers in other countries. Keep something from the adventure. Bringing a glass bottle to take home some sand is a popular way of creating your own souvenir from a beach vacation. But you can do this with almost any item! Whether it’s stones, ticket stubs from favorite shows and activities, or a handmade item from a class, make sure to look out for souvenirs that’ll remind you of great memories and experiences.

We hope these tips will help you make the best choice. Bon voyage!
