What are soft skills, and how can they be used most effectively?

Lara Smart Chartered FCIPPdip, director, LM Smart Consulting Ltd , explains how non-technical skills are an absolute necessity for payroll professionals

Here are just a few soft skills payroll professionals can require in their roles

W e all need soft skills to navigate our personal and professional lives. We value them before we even know or understand the term. They can’t be learnt theoretically but rather, are learnt, experienced and then practised. One of the best ways to develop soft skills is to meet and

overcome challenges and step out of our comfort zone. These ask more of us and require that we learn and grow in order to accomplish them. A manager, a leader, a team member all require soft skills in order to give their best performance. These are personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively

and harmoniously with other people – also known as the non-technical skills. The education approach differs for soft skills, which are met through learning, while technical needs are met through training: l learning: modifying behaviours (soft skills) l training: learning something new from start to finish i.e., a process.
