The Common Things C OMMON things in life are often the most important, though their value is not always realized. A recent writer says that the wheel is the most impor tant invention that man has ever pro duced. We are so accustomed to seeing “the wheels go around” that we probably have not stopped to think what this sim ple instrument is worth to the human race. Suppose we test its value by the process of elimination, and see what would be the effect of giving up the wheel. Without the wheel there would be no vehicles of travel on land, save the sled. Traveling through the air would be impossible. Water travel would be lim ited to the small sailboat guided by a hand-worked rudder. Practically every factory in the world would stop and all of their production would cease. Print ing would have to go back to the hand press of Benjamin Franklin, and all type setting would again be reduced to the slow process of hand work. The wheel makes modern life what it is. It fur nishes light and water for our homes. It cultivates, prepares and transports most of the foods found on our tables. It pro vides the clothes we wear. It builds our homes. It prints and delivers our books, daily papers and Church papers. It car ries us comfortably and rapidly on our journeys, on land, on the water, in the air. It makes possible the great and the small manufactory, which provides the world with necessities and comforts. Without the wheel we would fall back into the age of primitive man and we would know little of what is going on in the world. Yet no one knows when or by whom the wheel was invented, and no one has sung the praises of the inventor nor erected a monument to commemorate the bringing to the human race all of the blessings that have rolled in on the wheel. No doubt the inventor had no conception of its do ing mere than to help him in some simple daily task. We never know how the commonplace acts of life are going to de velop as the years go by. (From Presby terian of the South.) Mother Is Praying For Me In “Sketches of Western Methodism,” a striking incident is given of the life and labors of Rev. Wm. H. Raper: One year during the itineracy, he had to swim his horse thirty miles in order to reach his appointments. On one occasion his horse while swimming became en tangled and sank, throwing him off. It was a cold morning, and being encum bered with his great coat, he found it very difficult to swim. After struggling^ for some time he managed to get hold of

“Would not take $100 for it” “/ find it m ore help tu t than pen o r tongue can express” “It has given me new in spiration in Bible reading.” “I used it to preach 600 ser mons.” “The helps are a regular theological course.” These are a few comments from among the hundreds on file sent by some of the 500,000 readers of The Scofield Reference Bible Printed, in two sises of type, all styles being page for page the same.
