Committed to inclusion for all, Friendship Circle of Washington leverages the positive impact of friendship, understanding, and shared experience to transform the lives of children and teens with special needs and typically developing teens. We help create friendships that make a difference today and last a lifetime. We empower children and teens with special needs, helping them develop the skills they need to live as productive and independent adult life as possible. We empower our teen volunteers, helping them develop the confidence, self-esteem, and skills they need to become the leaders of tomorrow. We nurture community, working to ensure that inclusion and diversity are the norm, not the exception and that every individual has the opportunity to participate and succeed. We envision a world in which people with special needs and their families experience acceptance and friendship as contributing members of society. We foresee a future where they never again have to experience social isolation or unequal treatment. The Friendship Circle’s unique brand of social integration therapy simultaneously provides special needs families with the therapeutic and social support they need and promotes equal recognition for special needs individuals within our community. Our teens learn the importance of community involvement, the inherent value in individuals of all abilities, and develop the sensitivity and social skills necessary to be tomorrow’s leaders. This interaction also instills in our teens a responsibility for embracing special needs individuals on a personal level, and advocating for them on a societal level. OUR MISSION OUR MISSION “Building a world where everyone belongs.”
Our services are open to all families with children and teens with disabilities regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, faith, or income.
Friendship Circle of Washington is an independently-operating 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. While we are entirely responsible for our own operations, sustainability, and growth, we are part of a network of 83 worldwide Friendship Circle chapters. As a community, Friendship Circle chapters support each other, sharing program models and critical lessons learned. Friendship Circle of Washington is sustained through foundation, corporate, and government grants, as well as generous donations from private individuals.

Friendship Circle of Washington is a vibrant community built on connection, compassion, and inclusion. Through a wide range of innovative programs, we bring together children and young adults with special needs, their families, and teen volunteers to create meaningful relationships and life-changing experiences. From the individualized support of Friends@Home and the energy of Sunday Circle, to the skill-building in Life Skills, the exploration of Teen & Young Adult Adventures, and the joy of Birthday Club and Holiday Programs, each experience is carefully designed to foster growth, confidence, and a deep sense of belonging. Our Summer Camp adds another layer of fun and connection, giving participants a chance to engage in full days of activities, build friendships, and create memories that last all year long. Our programs don’t just support participants—they celebrate them. Children with special needs gain confidence and friendships that go beyond the program. Parents find relief, community, and connection through programs like Mom’s Night Out, while teens become compassionate leaders, gaining hands-on training and real-world empathy. The impact of U-Matter, our teen-led mental health initiative, is a powerful example of what happens when young people are trusted to lead conversations and build safe spaces around mental wellness. What sets Friendship Circle apart is our focus on relationships. Every interaction— whether it’s sharing a laugh during a group outing or offering support in a quiet moment —is part of a larger effort to build a more inclusive, understanding world. These programs plant the seeds of lifelong growth, acceptance, and connection—not only for our participants, but for everyone involved. OUR PROGRAMS OUR PROGRAMS

Sunday Circle
Sunday Circle, held twice a month during the school year, is a vibrant program where children with special needs and trained teen volunteers come together for afternoons filled with creativity, connection, and growth. Guided by experienced specialists and Friendship Circle staff, children engage in activities like art, music, movement therapy, yoga, and games—all designed to support their emotional and developmental needs. At the heart of it all are the one-on-one friendships between children and their teen buddies, relationships that foster confidence, belonging, and joy. While children thrive in this enriching environment, parents enjoy a few hours of well- deserved rest, knowing their child is in safe and compassionate hands. Beyond each Sunday, the impact lasts: children build social skills and self- esteem, teens grow into empathetic leaders, and families feel the strength of a truly inclusive community.

Our Programs Friends @ Home Friends @ Home
Friends@Home gives children with special needs the chance to bond with teen volunteers in the environment where they feel most comfortable— their own home. Whether baking cookies, playing games, creating arts and crafts, reading books, or simply having fun, these visits provide a powerful sense of belonging and self-worth for children who may not often experience the joy of having friends over. More than just a typical playdate, Friends@Home equips teen volunteers with ongoing training from specialists in creativity, movement, positive behavior support, occupational therapy, and speech therapy—skills they use during each visit. As meaningful friendships develop between children and volunteers, parents benefit from valuable time to rest and recharge. With so much joy packed into each visit, it’s no surprise that families eagerly look forward to seeing their volunteers each week.

Our Programs
Teen & Young Adult Life Skills
As older teens and young adults grow, preparing them for real-world situations and responsibilities becomes increasingly important—and Teen & Young Adult Life Skills is our response to that need. In this program, participants are paired with older neurotypical teen volunteers and supported by Friendship Circle staff as they engage in hands-on activities that build essential life skills. Each session offers a unique experience, typically involving a community outing where participants practice everyday tasks such as navigating public spaces, handling money, ordering food, or using public transportation—all while having fun and building confidence. Through these meaningful interactions and real-life experiences, teens and young adults gain independence, strengthen their social skills, and develop the tools they need to thrive in everyday life.

Our Programs Mom’s Night Out
Mom’s Night Out is a well-deserved opportunity for moms in our community to relax, recharge, and connect with others who understand their journey. Whether it’s a dinner out, a creative activity, or simply time spent together, each Mom’s Night Out is a chance to build friendships, share experiences, and feel seen and appreciated. It’s not just a night off—it’s a reminder that moms deserve care, too.
