Regulation and policies for new or existing infrastructure The development of efficient space related systems is of paramount importance. There seems to be a lack of coordinated efforts aimed at ensuring the proper implementation of policies pertaining to the growth of the space sector. There is insufficient coordination with external bodies to establish congruence between the policies and programmes of the space industry and its overarching policy and capability requirements. Currently, the space industry in Malaysia is primarily driven by government initiatives, with a substantial number of enterprises relying on government funding. Given this reliance, there is a pressing need for the development and implementation of a targeted and cohesive policy framework to facilitate private sector investment and sustainable growth in the space industry.
National security in space policy is vital. Key aspects include satellite protection, encryption, and cyber defence. Space situational awareness and traffic management prevent collisions. Regulations govern launches and technology exports. Diplomacy counters physical threats. International collaboration is essential. Comprehensive policies outline deterrence and resilience strategies. National space agencies monitor assets and security measures. International agreements promote peaceful space use. Communication networks and early warning systems enhance security. Space regulations adapt to emerging threats, safeguarding national interests in outer space. Security concerns have led to the close integration of space capabilities advancement with national security considerations, highlighting the need to safeguard space assets against potential adversaries and the looming possibility of space industry. The democratisation of access to and utilisation of outer space, includes considering the challenges associated with broadening accessibility beyond traditional government- led space initiatives. These developments are propelled by key factors, including technological advancements, shifting global economic dynamics, and the growing level of international cooperation between governmental entities and private enterprises.

Environmental impact
Resource consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, light pollution, radio frequency interference, and the potential contamination of celestial bodies are environmental aspects that demand careful consideration and regulation. The space industry’s growth should be accompanied by efforts to minimise its environmental footprint, such as improving rocket efficiency and developing sustainable practices. As space exploration expands and commercial activities in space increase, comprehensive and evolving regulations will play a pivotal role in ensuring that our exploration of the cosmos is not at the expense of our planet’s environment.
