Malaysian Technology Strategic Outlook

MALAYSIA INTO SPACE Applications of Space Technology in Malaysia The exploration of space technology applications by Malaysia has presented novel opportunities for the development and growth of the country. By means of initiatives such as the “Malaysia Into Space” programme and dedicated endeavours in technological adoption, the nation has successfully attained the capability to reach space, therefore facilitating a diverse array of applications that significantly contribute to scientific progress, economic development, and the enhancement of national standing.

The Malaysian Space Programme (Access to Space) The National Space Policy 2030, approved by the Malaysian Government, underscores its commitment to fuelling strategic economic expansion through the space domain. This visionary policy not only enables Malaysia to foster its national interests by ensuring access to space capabilities, but also reinforces the nation’s capability to oversee and regulate its national space activities effectively in accordance with the international legal frameworks. The implementation of the policy and the founding of the Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) serve as clear indications of the country’s dedication to the advancement of space technology and its incorporation into broader national development objectives. These programmes facilitate and promote innovation, research, and technology transfer, hence enhancing Malaysia’s standing within the global space community. The economics of space has grown stronger than ever before. In recent years, obstacles related to the manufacturing, launching, and operation of satellites and other space- based resources have markedly decreased. Satellites have undergone a process of ‘miniaturisation,’ leading to reduced production and operational costs. The integration of digital and cutting-edge technologies is enabling fresh entrants to tap into satellite operators’ data and explore new business applications. The establishment of launch capabilities via cooperative endeavours with international partners enables the successful deployment of satellites into orbital space. The availability of space access enables Malaysia to achieve self-sufficiency in launching and operating its own satellites, hence diminishing its dependence on external launch service providers.
