TRENDS IN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY (IP) REGISTRATION • R&D and intellectual property are intertwined as R&D drives innovation, and IP provides the legal framework to protect, incentivise, and monetise those innovations. Understanding how to strategically manage and leverage intellectual property is crucial for businesses seeking to thrive in innovation-driven industries. • There are four types of IPs namely: I. Patent II. Trademark III. Industrial Design IV. Geographical Indication • It is observed that over the last 10 years, there has been a significant rise in registration of various kinds of IPs. This is due to the increasing awareness of the importance of protecting research, breakthroughs, and innovation. • MyIPO statistics reported that there are more foreigners registering their IPs compared to the locals, especially for patent registrations. However, on a positive note, more Malaysians registered their trademarks compared to foreigners, except in 2020.
