Environmental, Health, and Safety By Phoebe Shamp Every year, Sumitomo Group Companies apply for the Annual Responsible Care Award. These awards highlight those who show that responsible care isn’t just policy, it’s everyday action. This is an employee driven award, focusing on innovation, collaboration, and impact. The ceremony is conducted in Japan.
This year, Valent North America’s Bill Osborne and Steve Zoubek received the RC Grand Award (the highest award) for the creation of the Life Critical Rules.
The Life Critical Rules were established to create a zero-tolerance policy on a set of rules intended to prevent significant injuries and/or fatalities. The Life Critical Rules are:
1.Entanglement: When working around rotating equipment, make sure guards are in place, don’t wear loose clothing or endanger your hands. 2.Hazards Control: Follow equipment isolation before working on equipment and never tamper with safety interlocks. 3.Fall Protection: Use measures and follow procedures to prevent and arrest falls from elevated work platforms above 4ft. 4.Confined Space Entry: Follow worksite permitting and procedures before entering industrial spaces. 5.Restraints: Ride only equipment designed for that purpose and always wear a restraint. 6.Safe Distance: Always keep a safe distance (10ft) from overhead loads and moving equipment, such as forklifts, vehicles, and agricultural equipment.
