San Diego’s largest and most successful Social Security Disability & Personal Injury Law firm

AN IMPORTANT DAILY REMINDER:

The Two Reasons I Wake up Each Day Excited to Go to Work N ow that we are officially midway through the year, I’d like to spend some time reflecting on all that has happened since the start of 2019. While I’ve been in the business of helping clients with their personal injury and disability claims for quite some time now, my passion for my job continues to grow with each passing year. There are ample reasons why I decided to go into this field in the first place, but the two that help me wake up in the morning excited to go to work are my hard-working office teammates and the great clients I have the pleasure to serve.

“While the members of my team certainly make each and every day special, nothing is more rewarding than when we work together to change a client’s life for the better.”

that person and offer support. In my experience at this firm, I’ve discovered that one employee’s success is emblematic of the whole team’s success. We win as a team, and we lose as a team, and no matter what happens, at the end of the day we’ll always remain a team that sticks together. While the members of my team certainly make each and every day special, nothing is more rewarding than when we work together to change a client’s life for the better. The vast majority of our clients are homeless; they often don’t know where they will sleep each night or when they will eat their next meal. We focus on taking those clients and giving them a stable income every month so they can, at the very least, fulfill their basic necessities: a place to live and a fridge full of food. We work hard to drastically change their lives — to make each day easier, happier, more comfortable, and survivable. Is there a better reason to get up each morning than knowing that you’re going to alter someone’s life for the better? I don’t think so.

Having a close-knit team is vital to a successful law firm. You’ll probably dub me biased, but the people with whom I share an office are the best around. In fact, the best part of my day-to- day routine is getting into the office early in the morning and greeting all my employees one by one. I’ll ask about how they spent their time outside of work the day before or about they spent time with their families. Just having these short but informative interactions with each staff member and hearing about their lives and the events they have going on outside of work is the highlight of my day. It starts my morning off with a fresh outlook and helps me feel like more than just their boss — it makes me feel like a friend or family member. At Jorgensen Law, our team is like one big family, and, when someone is celebrating a new engagement or new baby, we all celebrate as one big family. Similarly, when someone is going through a hard time, we can all rally around to comfort

Hiking With Your Kids

WATCH THEIR WORLD EXPAND WITH EVERY STEP

Hiking has many benefits as a family activity, such as mental

with you. Let your kids look at leaves, rocks, insects, or anything else you might come across on the trail. You can also bring binoculars to help them look at a bird that might be perched a little too high up. Another option is a bug holder to let your kids catch smaller insects, such as grasshoppers or pill bugs, and give them a close-up look. KEEP SAFETY IN MIND While you’re out on the trail, it’s essential to make sure that both you and your family are safe. Wear breathable, noncotton material and sturdy shoes that don’t expose your toes. It’s important to dress according to the weather. For example, if the day is sunny, wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays and apply plenty of sunscreen on any exposed skin. Bring your kids’ favorite snacks and water bottles for everyone to stay hydrated. It’s crucial that you also bring a fully stocked first-aid kit in case someone is injured on the hike. Starting with one of your local hiking trails can be a rewarding way to spend the day with your kids. You can watch their excitement as they expand their world with new discoveries.

health improvement, strengthening your relationships, and experiencing new sights and discoveries together.

It’s also great exercise, and you get plenty of quality time, fresh air, and sunshine. Here are three guidelines to help you and your kids have fun on your next hike. ENCOURAGE THEIR CURIOSITY One of the best ways to have your children learn about the world is letting them explore it. Being there for your children and encouraging them to ask questions about flowers, bugs, or animals you see on the trail will help them expand their vocabulary and learn how things work. When they learn they can explore independently and ask about the world around them, they’re gaining the confidence to teach themselves. BRING ALONG SOME TOOLS OF DISCOVERY Getting your children to engage in nature while you’re out hiking can be as simple as bringing a magnifying glass along

Keep Your Service Dog Cool While Working This Summer

SOME INVALUABLE INVENTIONS Many contraptions can help you keep your canine cool in the summer heat. Booties to insulate their toes and protect their paw pads from the hot asphalt, cooling vests that reflect sunlight off darker fur, and pressure- activated cooling pads are just a few of the gizmos you can purchase to stave off those scorching temperatures. WATER IN ALL ITS FORMS While certain dog breeds thrive in hotter climates, all pups need a little extra care when it comes to staying hydrated during the summer. For starters, always make sure they have ready access to drinkable water. If you have a long day planned, think about bringing a collapsible water bowl. MAKE ALLOWANCES While dogs usually work better in the heat than most people, it’s important to allow

Service dogs have a tough job, one that often includes odd hours, long work weeks, technical or specialized knowledge, and few breaks in between. If you have a service dog, keep in mind that in these soaring summer temperatures, there are several detectable signs of heat exhaustion you can watch for, including abnormal lethargy, vomiting, or a brightly colored blue or red tongue. Knowing the signs is important but so is prevention. Here are some tips to keep your service dog cool this summer. ACCLIMATION IS KEY Start by spending a few minutes of each day working outside with your canine. By carefully exposing them to rising temperatures over the course of several weeks, their body will begin to naturally adapt to the heat.

your working K-9 some leeway in performance. Keep in mind that dogs don’t sweat (except on the pads of their paws), so panting and direct heat exchange with the environment are the only ways they’re able to cool themselves. Give your partner extra time to complete tasks outdoors, and don’t be surprised if their obedience is a little less snappy or polished than it is when it’s cooler. Here at Jorgensen Law, many of our personal injury, Social Security, and disability clients work closely with service animals. If you need any other guidance about how to keep your own canine cool this summer, don’t hesitate to let us know!

Odin Lives Up to His Legendary Name THE GUARDIAN WHO WOULD NOT LEAVE HIS WATCH

A mid the devastation of the wildfires that tore through California in the fall of 2017, a few heroic tales rose up to give people hope. One such tale was of Odin, a loyal Great Pyrenees guard dog. Along with his sister, Tessa, and eight rescue goats, Odin is part of the Hendel family. It was mid-October when the Hendels were awoken by the smell of smoke, a fierce orange sky, and sounds of destruction — urgent warnings from Mother Nature. Gathering everyone as quickly as

The family made it to safety with Tessa in tow, relieved to be together but heartbroken that Odin and the goats weren’t with them. After several agonizing days, it was finally safe enough for them to return home and survey the destruction. What did the Hendels find? Ashes, rubble, their barn and home burned to the ground — and Odin. There he was, still guarding his eight goats and some small deer that had sought shelter with the brave canine. Weakened, burned, and limping, but nevertheless steadfast, Odin had never left his goats, even as the fire raged around them. Odin wagged his tail as he saw his family, happy to see they were also safe. The Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue and the Goatlandia Animal Sanctuary provided temporary shelter for the goats and pups while the Hendels rebuilt their barn. Odin received all the care he needed, along with a lot of love and treats. Today, he and his goats are back with their family, rebuilding their lives after this devastating wildfire. But the Hendels, and anyone who’s heard the story, won’t forget the bravery of Odin, the amazing pup.

they could, the Hendels got their human family members and Tessa in the car, but Odin, seated proudly next to the eight goats, refused to get in. Try as they might, the Hendels could not get him to come with them, and there wasn’t enough room in the car for the eight goats. With the firestorm quickly approaching and the risk of losing even more family members increasing with each passing minute, the Hendels made the heart-wrenching decision to leave Odin and the goats behind.
