A Tale of Wit and Wisdom

1

O nce upon a time, on the enchanting islands of the Seychelles, there lived a venerable giant tortoise named Trompé. Renowned for his immense strength and unwavering determination, Trompé was a respected figure among the island’s inhabitants. One day, feeling particularly self-assured, he issued a challenge to Zouti, a nimble and astute monkey known for his cleverness and agility. Trompé proposed a race, confident that his steady and relentless pace would ultimately surpass Zouti’s quick but unpredictable movements. Zouti, ever the strategist, accepted the challenge with a knowing glint in his eye, already plotting a cunning plan. The race route would weave through dense forests and across open plains, ending at the tallest tree on the island—a landmark visible from great distances. That night, Zouti gathered several of his monkey friends, instructing them to position themselves at different points along the route. Each one was to impersonate him, creating the illusion that the real Zouti was always ahead, no matter how far Trompé had progressed. At dawn, the race began. Trompé moved methodically, his massive legs propelling him forward with deliberate consistency. He kept a steady rhythm, certain that persistence would secure his victory. However, as he approached the first checkpoint, he was startled to see ‘Zouti’ waiting for him, lounging casually as if he’d been there all along.

Puzzled but undeterred, Trompé carried on, only to encounter another ‘Zouti’ further ahead, flashing a cheeky grin before disappearing into the trees. This kept happening at various points along the way, each sighting of ‘Zouti’ chipping away at Trompé’s confidence. He began to wonder how the monkey could possibly be so fast. Meanwhile, the real Zouti had taken a different approach. Using his agility, he nimbly navigated a more direct but

treacherous path, swinging through the treetops and scaling cliffs. His deep knowledge of the island’s terrain allowed him to bypass obstacles that would have slowed Trompé down. While the tortoise was steadily making his way along the main trail, Zouti had already reached the towering tree that marked the finish line. He climbed to its highest branch, where he could see the landscape below and await Trompé’s arrival. Hours passed, and the sun began to dip towards the horizon. Trompé, exhausted but determined, finally reached the base of the great tree. To his astonishment, there was Zouti perched high above, waving triumphantly.

Only then that Trompé realised he had been outwitted - not by speed alone, but by intelligence and teamwork.

Accepting his defeat with grace, Trompé called up to Zouti, “You have beaten me, not by strength, but by cleverness and strategy. I admit you have won this race.” Zouti grinned as he climbed down. “It was a fair contest, my friend. Your endurance is remarkable, and I have the utmost respect for your effort.” From that day on, Trompé and Zouti became firm friends, each appreciating the other’s strengths. Their story spread throughout the Seychelles, passed down from generation to generation as a reminder that intelligence and cunning can triumph over brute strength. More importantly, it taught that true wisdom lies in recognising and valuing different abilities. In the years that followed, elders would share the tale of Trompé and Zouti with children under the shade of palm trees, reminding them that teamwork and respect for others’ talents lead to harmony and success. The fable also served as a lesson in humility—that no single trait makes one superior. And so, the legend of the tortoise and the monkey lived on, a testament to the power of storytelling in passing down important life lessons about wisdom, respect, and friendship.
