A Tale of Wit and Wisdom
2
Puzzled but undeterred, Trompé carried on, only to encounter another ‘Zouti’ further ahead, flashing a cheeky grin before disappearing into the trees. This kept happening at various points along the way, each sighting of ‘Zouti’ chipping away at Trompé’s confidence. He began to wonder how the monkey could possibly be so fast. Meanwhile, the real Zouti had taken a different approach. Using his agility, he nimbly navigated a more direct but
treacherous path, swinging through the treetops and scaling cliffs. His deep knowledge of the island’s terrain allowed him to bypass obstacles that would have slowed Trompé down. While the tortoise was steadily making his way along the main trail, Zouti had already reached the towering tree that marked the finish line. He climbed to its highest branch, where he could see the landscape below and await Trompé’s arrival. Hours passed, and the sun began to dip towards the horizon. Trompé, exhausted but determined, finally reached the base of the great tree. To his astonishment, there was Zouti perched high above, waving triumphantly.
