The judge said, “I’m sorry, ma’am, b ut the law says you must pay $300 or spend three days in jail!” T he woman was crushed, and she began to weep. For some reason it touched the old judge’s heart. To the surprise of everyone in the court, he stood up, stepped down from the bench, walked over, took off his robe, and put on his sports coat. Then he walked around in front of the bench beside the lady, pulled out his checkbook, wrote out a check for $300, and laid it on the bench. He then walked back around, took off his sports coat, put his robe back on, and resumed his seat. He said, “Ma’am, the law says you must pay $300 or spend three days in jail, but I see that someone has paid the fine for you. Case dismissed!” In essence, that is what the Bible teaches that God did for us. When we were guilty, without hope, rightly deserving judgment and hell, in love, God the Judge, became a man in the person of Jesus (Philippians 2:6-11), lived a sinless life, and died on the cross to pay the penalty for the sins of the world. It’s like He wrote Himself into His own story to accomplish the task of forgiving helpless sinners like us. Jesus died for you, and shed blood to pay for all the sins you ’ve ever committed!
